Senator Durbin doubles down on arrogance

animatedflag1

For my friends in Illinois: We are coming up on a critical election in 2014,  just 12 short months away.  Our current Senator Richard Durbin is in his third term(18 years folks). I must confess that I voted for him the first time. He hypnotized me with his rhetoric just as Obama has hypnotized the entire country. Over the last eighteen years I have listened and watched Durbin transition from a moderate Democrat to a flaming Obama loving liberal.

Illinois has a huge powerful political machine froth with corruption. Durbin is a part of that machine. Illinois has neutered the Republican party and essentially we live in a socialized state.

Today, I learned who Durbin’s opposition is. Doug Truax, an unknown, is taking  on the Illinois Democrat Machine.  I urge you to visit Doug’s website and become familiar with the next Senator from Illinois.

Senator Durbin doubles down on arrogance.

Where do I begin? This has been such an emotionally charged week for me as I would like to believe it has been for you. I think the first thing I want to do is to extend my heart-felt thanks to the Leader of the House of Representatives John Boehner. He did exactly what is in his job description, he represented the people. That’s me! It has been a long time since a conservative citizen resident of Illinois has been represented in government. Usually, our Illinois Reps rubber stamp anything the boss tells them to do. As it is, I’m sure my Representative didn’t vote in favor of anything that I told him to vote for. My Congressman voted against me for two reasons: 1. he voted for what Obama wanted, 2. Congressman Bobbie Rush is black and I am white. (Liberals pretend they are not racist, but they are model racists in the twenty-first century.)

In all the years I have been politically aware, this is the first time, I saw an absolutely determined House of Representatives wage war against a President’s legacy bill. I am proud of the House of Representatives. I am not proud of the Senate. The Senate stood strong along party lines and stood firm for Obama’s goal to force his legacy health care program upon us. Instead of thinking about what is good for the country, the Senate slime-balls stood by the most despicable president that has ever pretended to lead the USA. I realize the Senate is the more mature, and the more responsible among our representatives because they have the advantage of the longer term, and as such have experienced more than a lowly Congressman could ever see. What this Senate did however, is stand firm for whatever the president wants without any regard for the will of the country. In this case, these élite members of the upper echelon of Obama’s government disregarded the will of the people because they know better than we do, and Obama Care is the elixir of Utopian society. Don’t you realize that we need this medicine to live?

The Senators who I have the most disdain for are Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham.  I voted for McCain in 2008, and I love the man for his heroic service to our country; Graham I am not to sure about. All along the aged, and learned Senators fought against junior Senators Mike Lee and Ted Kruz in the battle to defund Obama Care. (Defunding Obama Care was originally John McCain’s idea.)

In doing so, they split the Republican party. Why? Because as the senior all-knowing members of the party they flaunted their arrogance, much like Obama has flaunted his arrogance, instead of giving Lee and Kruz a chance to make something happen.

In my job as Chief Engineer of a very large Engineering Department (60 degree engineers) I was the Senior who had seen a lot of stuff tried over the years, and I did. I knew what worked and what we tried before that didn’t, but I realized that if I didn’t allow these younger engineers try out their ideas, they would never grow into super-engineers. I don’t remember how many times the urge to say, “we tried that before and it didn’t work,” wanted to spew from my mouth, but I bit my tongue instead. Because I had the courage to do that and to take responsibility for the failures of my staff, I can take credit for developing a group of engineers who could compete with any other group of engineers in the world and mop the floor with them.

John McCain screwed his opportunity, as did Lindsey Graham, to teach the junior members of the Senate a lesson by letting them run with their plan and to support them all along the way. Instead, these senior senators were too chicken-shit to take responsibility which they didn’t really have to take. All they had to do was to cheer the new guys on. Yes, history says these guys were going to lose, but so did all the guys who came up against the Goliath until David came along. No one told David that the Goliath couldn’t be taken down. David didn’t care, nor would he have cared, he did what was absolutely the right thing to do. He had nothing to lose but his life, but he cared for the people who were backing him. Who is to say that had McCain and Graham cheered the effort that Harry Reid might have flinched and allowed a concession? We will never know.

For all Republicans, Conservatives, and Tea Party Conservatives who read this blog, John Boehner and his cadre of Representatives fought a battle for us that we have never seen before in our life-time; we celebrate and view them with pride. The Republicans did not fail they only learned what will not work against the omnipotent Obama. They came to realize as did the American public that Obama was being very arrogant and stubborn and would rather see a default, than to give an inch. The Republican House of Representatives stood for principle and chose to do what is right for America, and to take the responsibility for what ever happens to them in the 2014 elections. Senators McCain and Graham will go down in history as the guys who split the Republican party at a time crucial to saving America from the curse of Obama Care.

I’m calling John Boehner’s office tomorrow to let him know how proud I am of his effort. I am also calling Senators John Mc Cain and Lindsey Graham to let them know that they are responsible for splitting the Republican Party.

Working In The Garden

Recently, I have used other people’s work on this blog. My time in the garden takes its toll on me and the result is a lack of energy left to write. My Lions Club work suffers also. Here it is the third day of summer, and I am still planting annuals in the 2013 Monet Vision. Hopefully, the plants will have enough daylight to survive and thrive before the first killing frost.

Spring came late for me because I spent most of it in Arizona. When I finally did arrive home, the temperatures in Illinois were much the same as what I had in February. The temperature reached 100 on the day we left. After spending three months in tee shirts and shorts, I suddenly found myself looking for warmth. Another delay occurred because my sister-in-law suffered a stroke shortly after we returned. We spent a good bit of time visiting with her and were at her bedside when she passed. Before I knew it, June had arrived and established itself before I pulled a single weed, bought flowers and even considered getting into the garden.

All of that stuff is over now, and I attack the Monet Vision daily with vigor, which runs out in a few short hours. So when I read a news articles like a Zombie, and it appeals to me, I re-blog or link with a minimum of personal expression. Hopefully, I select topics that appeal to my followers.

Being in the garden gives me time to think and to set goals. My list suddenly becomes almost impossibly long, but I will  take the goals baby step, by baby step and get the important things done. The Monet Vision is at the top of the list, next is blogging, third is work on my novel, and forth is the workshop. Oh, I completely forgot, Peggy fits in there too, and I also have to squeeze in a few moments for physical fitness like walking and bike riding. No, wait, I need to find time to spend with family and friends too. I can’t neglect personal relationships for mundane things like the workshop, blogging, and physical fitness. After all, imbibing Winking Owl with my old fart buddies takes precedence over everything else including Peggy(please don’t rat on me by telling Peggy I said that), and the Monet Vision.

Yesterday, it rained and I watched a Wabbit under the eaves eating bird seed dropped from the feeder. He looked familiar to me, but larger than the last time I saw him. Yes, it is the same Wabbit, it is Aga Bambi, last seen eating Petunias from the 2012 Monet Vision. Not a problem anymore, I’ll call the IRS and ask them to send a FBI drone over to keep the garden under surveillance. If the drones spot any signs of terrorist activity, they can tell me to take positive action.

Burning Gas-Moab-1

In nineteen seventy-one I went to the Schwinn Bicycle shop in Oak Lawn, Illinois to buy a bike for my wife. It was near Mother’s Day, and the kids (9,8,4) wanted mom to have a bike so she could ride with them. The shop owner was a middle age man who presented himself as an obnoxious oaf. How he survived with that attitude in a business dealing with customers made me wonder if attitude was necessary to succeed. I finally did buy a nice blue bike with narrow tires, hand brakes, and a five speed transmission for Barb. Maybe that is how the guy survived, he was the only game around.

In the course of my conversation with the man, I asked if Schwinn ever intended to make a heavy balloon tired bike with hand brakes and multiple speeds. He replied, “why would anyone want something like that?”  That was the day I invented the mountain bike in the flat state of Illinois. It wasn’t until a few years later that a kid from California cobbled together the bike I envisioned and began a craze that has not slowed down.

I finally bought my first mountain bike in nineteen seventy-eight, from Schwinn. I loved it. My town at the time was in Cook County, Illinois famous for crooked politicians and graft. One good thing Cook County has is a fabulous Forest Preserve District with thousands of acres of forested land around Chicago. Evidently the politicians of old owned horses because the Forest Preserve boasts of over one hundred miles of horse trails. Those trails became my private mountain bike experience for the next twenty-five years. Biking on horse trails became my passion. I also notched many week-long bicycle tours on my belt.

During the course of my cycling history Moab, Utah became the goal. Cycling magazines featured tours and photo essays of the fabulous bicycling on the rocks of Moab. I longed to take a tour there, but it has never happened. The lure to visit Moab, however, stayed deep in my psyche. When I began to winter in Arizona, I realized that Moab was really very close to where I stayed. Close is a relative term, Moab is still over four hundred miles from the Valley of the Sun. Nevertheless, I kept longing to visit and tour Arches National Park. Finally, the stars and the moon were in correct alignment with Neptune and it happened.

Moab, Utah has built an economy around mountain biking, rafting, rock climbing, off-road touring, and photography. The town is a mecca for young twenty and thirty something outdoor types fascinated by adventure. I believe Peggy and I were the oldest people in town.

We scheduled a day to tour Arches National Park, and I’m glad we did. The park is just a couple of miles from Moab, and very accessible by major highways. My heart beat fast as we crossed a bridge and I spotted a sign that said, “Colorado River.” Are you kidding me? I drove over the mighty Colorado. I’ve never traced the head waters of the Colorado and was totally unaware that it enters Arizona by crossing Utah as it comes from Colorado. Previously, the only glimpse I ever had of the mighty river is from the edge of the Grand Canyon. I asked Peg if she was up to a raft ride on the Colorado, she promptly put the notion out of my mind with a rather short “NO.”

At the gate, I flashed “The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass” I bought last year at White Sands. The attendant, one of my employees in a Smokey the Bear uniform, handed me a map and waved us through. Thank God there is a seventeen mile road that winds around Arches. We did see some hearty white-haired bicyclists pumping hard up a hill, but motorists out numbered cyclists by about a thousand to one. The scenery is better than Monument Valley of the day before.  There are many arches formed by water erosion of the soft orange-red stone. We saw most of the arches from drive-by view-point. The most popular ones need a vigorous hike to get close too. It made me appreciate all photographs of the arches because the photographer expended enormous energy to take the photos. I did take some point and shoot photos, but  they are not calendar quality. The drive took us four hours to complete before we cried uncle and headed for some food. Just sitting in the car and seeing all the fabulous rock formations that have taken four-hundred thousand years to form burned us out.

Photo ID’s

This week, between Peg and myself we’ve been in doctor offices four times. Each different doctor required a check-in which consisted of:

1. a photo of the patient

2. insurance cards copied

3. signatures on statements that we agree to pay in blood if Medicare does not cover our visit. Apparently, the doctors do not yet know if Medicare covers what they prescribe. I wonder if Dr. Death knows?

The photo really caught my attention. For what possible reason could a doctor need your photo? The doctor sees what you look like each time you visit. In my case he even knows my name and calls me Joe. My mind worked overtime and finally the little light-bulb came on, you know the old-fashioned kind of Edison bulb with tungsten filaments in them, not the curly fluorescent kind loaded with deadly mercury. Answer this question: who in the health care system does not know what you look like? As of January 1, 2013, parts of the PPACA became effective. So the answer is, Obama does not know what you look like. I shuddered each time the shutter clicked, because now my ugly likeness is going into a national database. Most likely this is one database that Homeland Security will share with the DOJ, FBI, CIA, ICE, IRS, SSA, Secret Service, the Frankfort Police, the Will County Sheriff, the Illinois State Police  and every other big brother organization wanting to look into your life without you knowing it.

A second light bulb went off a few seconds later with a new question. Why is it that my picture is in my health file, on my driver’s license, my firearm owners ID, and the pass I use to travel on Metra at a discount without discrimination, and not on my voter registration card?

photo

The DOJ defends their argument not to use picture ID’s for voter registration because somehow it discriminates against certain people, and as such keeps them from the voter rolls. Yet, many government agencies require these same people to have photo id’s to drive, to see a doctor, to own a gun, and to use public transportation. In Illinois the libs have passed the motor-voter law so you can register to vote when you apply for a driver’s license which requires a photo. Illinois recently, passed a new law allowing illegal aliens to get a driver’s license. Guess what? Each illegal will be asked if he wants to register to vote at the same time. The same photo taken for the driver’s license can easily be duplicated for a minimal cost for use on the voter registration id. Taking two pictures at one time is a technology problem beyond the comprehension of Congressional leaders. (Remember we voted them in.)

There hasn’t been a new light going on above my head with an answer to that one.

I think this question warrants a letter to my Senators and Congressman, don’t you?
