Big Al Pumpkin and Friends

Who knows what lurks inside the great pumpkin?

Big Al is not the ordinary pumpkin. He is the protagonist in my story titled, “Big Al Pumpkin.” His mission is to do the most good for the most people. What do you think the mission is? If you want to find out, get  a copy of  my book. I wrote it for my grandkids.

“Shining City Upon the Hill”

Ronald Reagan inspired me with his speeches. None excited me more than the image he painted of the “Shining City Upon the Hill.” My heart swelled with pride as I envisioned our great country pictured as a beacon of hope and opportunity.

Barack Obama inspires me also; to move to Australia. He is chipping away at the concept of the shining city as rapidly as he can. He has employed several czars (32 to be accurate) to change policy in every conceptual institution that the shining city is built upon.

I sat in church this weekend and listened to a great priest who was “begging.”  His job was to travel from parish to parish around the country and tell the story of homeless babies in the Caribbean countries like Haiti, and in South America where a million children a year starve to death. The organization is called “Food For the Poor.” They are a volunteer organization. With their efficiencies in place, 96% of the money collected is converted to food and necessities. I thought to myself, what a great bunch of people to create and run such an effort. As I sat and thought about what they do, and what my pledge will be, I began to wonder what future the kids who are being saved from starvation will grow into.  Currently, I don’t see the government of  Haiti providing for their own. Yet, I bet the leaders of the country all live in some opulent housing and are not starving as their people are.  They do depend on “Food For The Poor” and similar organizations to do it for them. What is that government doing to create the “Shining City Upon the Hill,” for their children?

Here in America, I see the new government spewing rhetoric about the need to re-distribute the wealth. Who will they re-distribute it to? Like in Haiti, I see our own leaders living in opulent housing, being driven by chauffeurs in very nice bullet proof sedans,  to even more opulent dinners. While we the tax payers sit in squalor waiting to be thrown a bone. I see the leaders tearing down the fabric of the Shining City to make life for the masses so much harder. I see tax dollars going into government departments that do not have a ninety-six percent efficiency, but less than fifty percent efficiency. In the meantime the number of  fat-cat government positions  increase and they  become the recipients of the re-distribution.

Come to think of it, I’ve never heard  Barack Obama’s vision for his country, have you?

POTUS and His Army of Czars

TASS, USA Style

History repeats itself, but we tend to deny that the same thing will happen to us because we are so much smarter. The generation that allowed a stupid event to occur did not have the history to look back upon. Because we have the history to learn from we will never let that stupid thing happen to us. Even if we didn’t have the history, we are much smarter than the last generation was. The arguments against making the same mistake continue to go on, and we continue living with our heads securely lodged in our asses. We are too stubborn to believe a stupid thing like the loss of a first amendment right, or a second amendment right can happen, even after repeated attempts to destroy these rights.

This week something happened that woke me up and caused me to start writing again. If I choose to ignore the Administration’s attempt to block news from an organization that opposes it’s view, then I am remiss and deserve to lose my rights . I, however, choose to speak out. During the campaign preceding the election of BHO to the presidency, I often spoke of my fears regarding the man and his intentions. I “felt” that he was heading us into a socialist direction. As the campaign progressed, his language and demeanor made me more certain I was correct. Now, I am convinced without a doubt, that Obama wants to be  the next Fidel Castro of our hemisphere. He will not rest until he has destroyed the Constitution, Capitalism, and the Country of the USA. He continues to lower our country to the level of every other country in the world.  He wants us to be the same as everyone else. The idea of the USA being the greatest country in the world is foreign to him. I digress.

Our Constitutional right to a free press is bothering the man. His Communications Director , Anita Dunn openly admitted that during the campaign they controlled the press. They did not allow interviews with the press for fear that some smart ass might ask a question that they were not prepared to answer with ambiguities. That is why Joe the Plumber became such a threat to Obama. He asked one question that Obama did not have a scripted answer for. BO’s answer gave us a peek into the real direction he was headed.

His attack on Fox News was a blatantly open attempt to get his administration to control the media just as they had done during the campaign. Life is so much easier when the answers dictate the questions being asked. Instead we see reporters like the little boy who asked the President, “Why do people hate you so much?”

I really feel sorry for the winners of the Nobel prizes. Many of the recipients have spent a lifetime seeking solutions. Yet, this year, because of the ridiculous way in which the Nobel committee awarded a totally unaccomplished individual the Nobel Prize for Peace, they have demeaned all Nobel award winners.  Let’s hurry and make our beloved USA more like Norway. It is the model for the rest of the world as the perfect place to live.

By the way, where is Norway?

Why Is Health Care So Expensive?

High Cost DocumentationDuring the last couple of weeks, I got a first hand reminder of what  it is like in a health care system.  My late Auntie Marie was hospitalized for a few days before she died. Of course, Peggy and I visited often during those days. There was one thing that stuck out as I walked the halls of a well known suburban hospital. No matter which floor we were on,  or which nurse’s station we were near, people were diligently entering data or writing on charts.
I began to wonder what that was all about. Very few of these people were tending to patients, yet all of them were very busy. These people are all very expensive. Health care workers don’t come cheap. What is so important to require so much documentation? I quizzed my daughter, who is a nurse, to explain. We had a very nice father daughter discussion on the matter. She cleared up some of my mis-conceptions.
In summary here is why they document:
1. If it ain’t documented the insurance company, Medicare, etc. doesn’t pay. Of course the hospital is a business, and requires money to run. Patients never like to pay for their own health care,  therefore they pay for insurance to pay the bill for them. The insurance companies are also in business to make a profit. They sell us policies with fine print defining just what they will cover. Medicare does the same thing. Their rules are just as stringent as any insurance company’s. Therefore, hospitals document in order to charge.
Insurance companies take a bad rap when they cite the fine print in a policy, and refuse to pay. We should all be more careful when we buy policies. We tend to go for the lowest cost. Of course we do, why pay more? Except we don’t read the details, or the details don’t matter when we sign the contract. There is a famous insurance company commercial, running now, that touts the ability to tailor make a policy to fit your budget. Guess what? They do it by limiting your benefits. We go for price, they go for the sell, and we are happy until we get into a health crisis and the bill comes to us.
2. Doctors need information from the nurses in order to make your health care decisions. They work by reading test reports, and the charts documenting vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and  repsonses to medications.  Doctors also write instructions to the nurses for your treatment. Then, as a CYA they document their treatment plan and diagnosis. Again, if it ain’t documented they don’t get paid. A doctor  might spend ten minutes per patient reading a chart, and two minutes talking to him. If you have a serious problem, the doc may take three minutes to explain the prognosis.  Nurses document your vital signs, and dispense drugs. Certified Nursing Assistants do all the other dirty work of keeping patients comfortable. In the good old days, the nurse did it all. My wife Barbara tended to a surgical ward at West Side VA hospital back in 1959. She took care of, and documented up to thirty patients at a time. Life was simpler back then.
3. Hospitals have quality control programs. They are crappy compared to the ones  industry has  put into place to make all the products, and drugs they use, but they have systems.  These systems require documentation. In my business, we said that if we could measure something, we could improve it. Therefore, any quality system requires data documenting metrics that can show management if they are doing well. Most hospitals require you to complete a satisfaction questionnaire when you leave. This is an example of their input.
4. Lastly, health professionals document to CYA (cover your ass). All doctors and hospitals are so afraid a patient will sue them that they over document in order to cover themselves in the event that one of them makes an error. Or, if the patient and his family perceive a screw up.
The bottom line is that I saw dollars with wings and heard a cash register ringing as I walked the corridors of that hospital.
Obama’s solution to this problem is to invent a totally new health care system to compete with the one in place. If the actual health care industry doesn’t know how to fix their problem, what makes us think a group of Congressman and Senators can  invent  a new system to fix it all?
Bend over America, the government wants to give you an enema.
In a future post, I will present a plan for realistic reform. Stay tuned.
