A Light Went On

Dr Consults with Federal Obamacare for Direction In my world of engineering, I studied project management. Last week, I thought about one of the basic tenets of the training. A light went on above my head. A picture emerged on the subject of  health care. There is a rush by the democratic snake oil salesman to sell the American public on the need for a radical reform of the health care system. Never mind that the current system works fine for 75% of the people.

I keep hearing about the 47 million people  who do not have health care insurance.  Of course twelve million of these are illegal aliens who shouldn’t qualify for any freebies from the government.  Another twelve million are people who wouldn’t buy or use health care insurance if their life depended on it. That reduces the forty seven million to twenty three million. In my book of arithmetic that translates into six and a half percent of the population that we are worried about. Using the laws of statistics, there is probably some error in these numbers. It might even be as high as six percent. If I have erred and the margin of error is on the minus side, the number of people who are uninsured is .5%. For that we want to create a government bureocracy that will bankrupt the country and take away our freedom.

What does all this have  to do with project management? The rule I learned was this; Good, Fast, Cheap–Pick Two.

The rule applies to making things or to designing health care systems.

1. If you want a good plan designed and implemented fast. It won’t be cheap.

Therin lies the national bankruptcy charge and the higher cost to the U.S. taxpayer, me and you.

If you want a good plan that is cheap, It won’t be fast.

That is why we must slow this bill down. I know the guys in Washington  designing this reform are like  a room full of chimpanzees who are banging away on typewriters. Eventually the chimps will prepare the perfect plan.  Another way to look at this is you will stand in line for a long time to get service that is free.

3. If you want a cheap plan that is fast, it won’t be good.

This is what Obama is directing lawmakers to give us.  Think about how many generations of Americans will be stuck with lousy health care service because the president wants it to be done fast, for what? I believe he wants it fast so we don’t have time to think about it. Kind of like passing a thousand page stimulus bill without knowing what is in it. I think health care warrants some careful planning and debate that will yield a system that is the best the country can devise, not one that is cobbled together by a bunch of self interest groups that have had pressure applied.

The thought of seeing my parents being advised by a government flunkie about  other options available than health care gives me the willies. I think if it comes to an mandated advisor coming to talk to me about options, I will give him a new one. i.e. the  option I have to excercise my second amendment right to defend myself from crazies.

It is sooo clear to me that the project management rule applies right on the money to our current situation.

President Obama wants a good plan, he wants it to be cheap, and he wants it fast. He can’t have it. He can only have two of the three.

We need to defeat the Health Care Reform Bill or break the rule of Good, Fast, Cheap.

Converting Dollars to Cents

Government"s Idea for HealthcareIt is not that I don’t trust big government with my health care dollar, it is that I don’t trust big government with any of my dollars. I see a record of tired old ideas that have failed to produce the utopian society that they were invented for.

Take education, as an example. We spend more dollars per student than any country in the world, yet our kids can’t read. Why?

Take Medicare as another example. It is a system that is limited to the senior population. Yet, Medicare is broke. Why? One reason is that over the years it has been expanded to include too many non-seniors.

Take the DEA as another example. Are we really winning the war on drugs?

How about the Department of Energy. Invented by Jimmy Carter to reduce our dependence on foreign oil in  the 1970’s. Have we seen an effect yet? I could go on and on with every department in the government and report a dismal record of expenditures. Why do we insist on continuing these stupid lame policies?

The cartoon above depicts my vision  of how our tax money will be used by big government on healthcare.

Dr. Obama

No doubt the country wants some form of universal health care. Why? I cannot understand. Health care is a recent invention. I recall, when growing up, that mother took me to the doctor on a streetcar. She paid him in installments. If I was really sick, he came to the house. People lived, and they died.  Today, we seem to have this idea that we need to be taken care of, and we want the government to do it.

I blame the insurance companies for creating this monster. Forty years ago,  if a person went to a doctor with a problem, the doctor asked if he had hospitalization insurance. If the person did, he was hospitalized for tests. That way the patient wouldn’t have to pay. The doctor and the insurance company were in cahoots with each other. The government got into the act with Medicare in 1965.  It was created to provide for the “general welfare.”

It has inculcated a mindset that we are entitled to healthcare. Maybe we are, but there are limits. Be careful what you wish for.

Oh yes, yes,  please  throw me the 29 cent bone, and I’ll gladly pay $28,571.43 at the checkout.

How stupid does POTUS think we are? Feed that line to your liberal thinking “tax the rich,”  loving supporters.

Take Vitamins and Live Healthy

My Flag Flies Everyday

My Flag Flies Everyday

Life continues to teach lessons to the end. I confess that I am three score and ten in years, but I am still learning everyday. Just this week I learned something new. Since I try to be a positive person, I look for the positive that comes out of a negative. Last week I received a call from a loan company telling me that I was fourteen days past due on a loan payment. The loan company is a government backed organization similar to Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.  For once they were correct about my late payment. They did me a favor by calling to remind me of the oversight. I told them I would send them money immediately. At the same time, I completed a form requesting a direct debit from my checking account to prevent the problem from occurring again. On Thursday, I rushed to the Post Office to send the check and the request.  I wanted the check to get there fast so I chose to send it by “Express Mail.” It cost $17.65 to send the money this way. It was guaranteed to be in their hands within twenty four hours.  At the same time, I mailed my request for direct debit by certified first class mail; the cost was $2.65.

My experience with the US Postal Service has been fair. I always trust them and expect my mail to get through. I remember as a kid that the mailman came to the house twice a day. We had a morning and an afternoon delivery to the front door. Currently, I have to walk to the curb to pick up my mail and I’m lucky if it comes sometime between nine and four. The service is now threatening to cut service to five days a week down from six. I still expect them to perform as faithful servants of the people by getting the mail through.

Today, I received a letter from the loan company telling me that I was in arrears. I decided I had better check on the status of my payment. I enterred the tracking number into the USPS website and got a surprise. The payment arrived at the loan company on Saturday afternoon, not on Friday as planned. There was no one at the office to receive the mail and sign for it. The USPS left them a form indicating they have special mail and they should make arrangements for a redelivery to occur. It is Monday and the payment is still late.

I was furious and called the local PO. A nice lady explained the process to me. Yes they were late with the delivery. I had no recourse except to hope  the loan company will request a redelivery. I asked her if I can claim a rebate for the $17.65 . “Yes,” she said, but you have to wait until the item is delivered to make a claim. Then I have to prove to the local PO that it was late.

Later this evening, I checked the USPS site again and learned that the item was delivered at 10:00 a.m. ten this morning. The second item sent to the same place by snail mail arrived at  8:39 a.m.

All of this got me to thinking about our  desire to make “Change We Can Believe In.” The latest direction is to nationalize health care. The idea that we will screw up our health care system by giving it to the government is insane. The USPS has had two hundred years to get it right, and they continue to erode their service. Their employees are indifferent to their performance, and are generally unhelpful. Can you imagine what it will be like trying to get cured using the bureocracy? I suggest we all take vitamins and live healthy, because getting help will be like expecting the post office to deliver a piece of mail on time.
