Father-Son Love Story

This book is a refreshing breath of Spring. Michael Reagan has written a stirring account of his father. He does it only  as a loving son can. Michael’s love for his father shows through in an exceptional manner. He shares stories about his dad that we have never heard before. They are tales from his boyhood and about campaigns for governor and president.

Michael also reminds the reader of the principles that his dad lived by. In so doing he presents a formula for how we can remake America into the Ronald Reagan vision of the Shining City on the Hill. (See my cartoon Shining City Upon the Hill)

I was a young man when I voted for Ronald Reagan. I did so because I loved his positive message and vision. Every time I heard Ronald Reagan speak, he made me feel good. It didn’t matter if it was a campaign speech or a State of the Union Speech, he made me feel great about America each time.  I miss that.

Today, all I hear are eloquently worded speeches that tell me how tired, old ideas don’t work. Well, I’m here to tell you that the speaker who laments tired old ideas that don’t work is espousing even more tired old ideas that have been proven repeatedly to not work. Yet in his mind they are the road to utopia.

Michael Reagan also points out some of the evils we are up against; like  left winger George Soros, and Acorn. He explains how they fit in the Obama playbook, and also how his father would deal with these guys.

In his discussion on how Conservatives should deal with Hispanics, Michael taught me about a little known law passed during his fathers presidency. It is the Simpson-Mazzoli Immigration Reform and Control Act (1986). This act was a bi-partisan way for dealing with illegal immigration. It makes total sense today. A new law based on this act  is currently being promoted by Representative Mike Pence of Indiana. If we want a rational policy on how to treat illegals this act is the way. The law had three major portions in it. They called it a three-legged stool. The law failed because one leg of the stool was not adhered to. See if you can guess which one it was.

1. Improve Border Security  to end the flow of illegal entries.

2. Provide migrant workers with temporary work permits that give them legal entry.

3. Provide a path for the temporary worker to acquire legal permanent residency, and to citizenship.

This law is simple and it is beautiful. It can work if the government had the will to do so. The law failed because our government failed to secure the border. Does that sound familiar? That is why we have  the mess we have today. One Cesar Chavez led a program to defeat the migrant worker program. Do you remember him? He organized and led the union for agricultural workers. It bothers me is that this law is still active. It has not been repealed. It represents another example of  our nation making a big deal about  the rule of law. Laws that Uncle chooses too follow, or to ignore dependent on his favor.  Why have a Constitution and laws if that is the case?

I loved this book for several reasons:

1.0)  I am a Conservative and this is a story about a Conservative, and conservative principles

2.0) it is a Father-Son love story , and

3.0) it gave me suggestions for how I can promote the ideas and principles of Ronald Reagan.

TEN STARS

Davenport’s Bright Idea

There was a time when I was in love with the state of Iowa. Twice in my life, I had opportunity to ride my bicycle across the state on the largest organized bike ride in the country called RAGBRAI (Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa). The ride begins at the Missouri River on the west, and finishes at the Mississippi on the east. It takes seven days to complete the course. Every year the organizers route the ride through a different set of towns.  I have ridden my bicycle over one thousand miles of Iowa and have stayed in, or passed through forty towns.  I met a lot of great people. They are friendly, helpful, and cheerful.

Most of Iowa is agricultural. I peed in many cornrows, and passed by hundreds of acres of soybeans. I rode quickly past many pig farms. The stench being, well let me just say distinctive. Just about every town had at least one church with a cross on the steeple

Farmers are usually small businessmen. They are independent, and in my mind conservative.  . That is why I was surprised to see the big support Iowans gave Obama. It is also a surprise, that the city of Davenport, Iowa wanted to change Good Friday to “Celebrate Spring Day.”  It was their attempt to separate the church from the state.

I have a suggestion for Iowa. If you want to separate church from state, do not celebrate the holidays. I believe government should work three hundred and sixty five days a year.  You pay the bill, and as boss it should be your rule for your government to follow. If you do not like it leave, and work for the private sector. The state will improve with fewer people working for it. Besides, by working an extra hundred and five days, you need fewer people to do the work.  Do not try to change two thousand years of tradition and the culture of Christianity because you believe in separation of church and state.

For the farmers of Iowa, please do not get any more good ideas like Obama again.  I recommend that you get away from the pig farm regularly, and breathe some fresh air. That way when another Obama shows up you will be able to recognize what he really is by the odor.

Ronald Reagan’s reflection on God and morality: “Without God, there is no virtue, because there’s no prompting of the conscience. Without God, we’re mired in the material, that flat world that tells us only what the senses perceive. Without God, there is a coarsening of the society. And without God, democracy will not and cannot long endure. If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under. I’m convinced more than ever that man finds liberation only when he binds himself to God and commits himself to his fellow man. Our liberty springs from and depends upon an abiding faith in God.”

Decisions, Decisions, Oh Dear What Am I to Do?

I’m glad the rules of football require time limits on making decisions.  Can you imagine any football game if  it took the coaches hours to make a decision about the next play while the players stood on the sideline freezing their butts off. If the Commander-in-Chief (CIC) continues to run the war as he has, Congress will have to begin passing laws limiting the amount of time the Chief has to make a decision. Of course, with the ass kissing Democratic Congress we have now, it is highly probable that Congress would write the law requiring twelve months to make any decision that was not on the Liberal Left agenda. If POTUS were the coach of an NFL team he’d have more pressure on him then he does as Commander-in-Chief.

Being that POTUS is a basketball player, I have to believe he understands the concept of winning. He leaves me wondering if he has the same philosophy when it comes to beating hostile tribes who are hell-bent on destroying the United States. Then again, he is doing a pretty good job of that himself. Could it be that he is one of them?

POTUS gave an un-inspiring speech at West Point the other night. In it, he openly announced his game plan for the war. I’m sure the Taliban has already begun an exodus from Afghanistan to begin a holiday that will last until September 2011.  After our troops begin to pull out, the Taliban and Al Qaeda will begin their hostility anew.  In the meantime we will have spent another sixty billion dollars plus for nothing.  POTUS confirms Sadam Hussein’s prediction that the US has no stomach for war and that we would leave the mid-east after a very short time.

CIC will attempt to pull Euorpean countries into the fray to assist him in his mission. As usual, they will all have more important things on their plates. POTUS will be forced to take it on all by himself. We all know he won’t do that. He’ll leave and quit even though he has openly declared, in the war against the people of the U.S on Health Care Reform, that he is not a quitter.

POTUS needs to learn Ronald Reagan’s policy regarding war; “we win they lose.”

“Shining City Upon the Hill”

Ronald Reagan inspired me with his speeches. None excited me more than the image he painted of the “Shining City Upon the Hill.” My heart swelled with pride as I envisioned our great country pictured as a beacon of hope and opportunity.

Barack Obama inspires me also; to move to Australia. He is chipping away at the concept of the shining city as rapidly as he can. He has employed several czars (32 to be accurate) to change policy in every conceptual institution that the shining city is built upon.

I sat in church this weekend and listened to a great priest who was “begging.”  His job was to travel from parish to parish around the country and tell the story of homeless babies in the Caribbean countries like Haiti, and in South America where a million children a year starve to death. The organization is called “Food For the Poor.” They are a volunteer organization. With their efficiencies in place, 96% of the money collected is converted to food and necessities. I thought to myself, what a great bunch of people to create and run such an effort. As I sat and thought about what they do, and what my pledge will be, I began to wonder what future the kids who are being saved from starvation will grow into.  Currently, I don’t see the government of  Haiti providing for their own. Yet, I bet the leaders of the country all live in some opulent housing and are not starving as their people are.  They do depend on “Food For The Poor” and similar organizations to do it for them. What is that government doing to create the “Shining City Upon the Hill,” for their children?

Here in America, I see the new government spewing rhetoric about the need to re-distribute the wealth. Who will they re-distribute it to? Like in Haiti, I see our own leaders living in opulent housing, being driven by chauffeurs in very nice bullet proof sedans,  to even more opulent dinners. While we the tax payers sit in squalor waiting to be thrown a bone. I see the leaders tearing down the fabric of the Shining City to make life for the masses so much harder. I see tax dollars going into government departments that do not have a ninety-six percent efficiency, but less than fifty percent efficiency. In the meantime the number of  fat-cat government positions  increase and they  become the recipients of the re-distribution.

Come to think of it, I’ve never heard  Barack Obama’s vision for his country, have you?

POTUS and His Army of Czars

“He alone, who owns the youth, gains the Future!”

I am really concerned about the lack of understanding regarding the president’s address to the nation’s school children. Why is it harmful for the president talking about the value of staying in school, right?  I agree, he is the  Commander In Chief.  He should be the role model for the nation. Presidents G H W Bush, and Reagan also addressed  school children. George W Bush was urged to read books to school kids  by his school teacher wife Laura. The message was that “learning to read is important.” President Reagan’s message to older children was a civics lesson. President George Hiram Walker Bush’s message was on the value of education and  the importance it plays in your success in life.

I am positive that all of these men, including Obama had, or have honorable intentions. Where I see the potential danger in Obama’s address comes from his radical ideas, and his socialist agenda. Yeah, yeah, he is just going to give the kids a pep talk about school. People old enough to have lived through some history, know that former dictatorial governments began seducing the youth of their countries with honorable activites. There are two that come to mind: 1.) Hitler Jugend and 2.) Young Pioneers, both were formed to take advantage of, and to brainwash kids to work toward  organization objectives as adults. If I could believe Obama loves the USA as much as I do, I wouldn’t be afraid nor imply that he has something else in mind for our kids. The bottom line is that I believe Obama’s “Change We Can Believe In,” is to ruin our capitalist way of life by converting us into a socialist state. Is he planting a seed of change in our schools?
