Mojave Caper

This story begins after World War I, in 1934.  Many men from America fought in that war to save Europe from a dictator. Many of them never came home.  The ones that survived wanted to honor their fallen friends. One of them, a WWI Army medic has maintained a memorial shrine in the Mojave for fifty years. The VFW took over after John Riley Bembrey could no longer do the job.

The memorial is a cross atop a hill in the middle of God’s majestic and beautiful desert filled with Joshua trees, cactus, and rocky, sandy desolation. They chose the spot because those who went there, to honor the dead, could commune with nature, God, and possibly to speak to a fallen comrade.

Not many people knew of or heard of this monument until recently when the cross became news. One of our fellow Americans saw the cross, and decided it upset his sensitive psyche. The man, a former National Park Service employee, filed a suit in federal court claiming that the cross was a violation of separation of church and state because it was on federal land, and it upset his sensitive psyche. The court ruled in his favor and covered the cross with plywood to appease him.

The matter did not end with the plywood.  The ruling was appealed and brought before the Supreme Court. The Court ruled that the cross could stand because it is a symbol for fallen soldiers. Not to mention the bag of worms the court would open. Think of the thousands of crosses in military cemeteries all around the world. The government would have to remove them because we upset one person’s sensitivities.

Within two weeks of the Supreme Court ruling, the cross standing on a hill in the Mojave, disappeared. Who could have taken it? I have some leads for the FBI to follow. Here they are:

  1. the chicken shit employee who started the protest. Not a chance, the guy doesn’t have the balls to perform such an act.
  2. the ACLU. This is a better option. This decision is a loss for them. They would sooner defend a person’s right to atheism than the rights of those who fought and died for that right.  They also have the money to hire thugs who know what a hacksaw is. They themselves would never consider getting their lily white hands dirty outside of court.
  3. Obama. He is a prime suspect because he has claimed that America is not a Christian Nation. The Supreme Court ruling has discredited that claim by giving fallen soldiers an association with the symbol for Christianity. Since the Muslims deny the holocaust, it would not be surprising that they also deny the existence of the hundreds of thousands of crosses in military cemeteries proclaiming Christianity as a valid belief. He also has the resources to make it happen.
  4. the VFW. They may be taking the cross to more secure ground than federally owned land.
  5. lightning. A huge bolt of energy from heaven struck the cross and vaporized it. Surely, a sign that God is unhappy with America and the direction of “Change” we are taking.

You can add many more possibilities to this list, but they will not bring the cross back. Nor, will another stupid reason bring honor back to the foolish destruction of a symbol honoring our military.

The Gift (A serial, part 4)

THE GIFT (A serial, part 4)

Morty cut down the beautiful spruce, with the empty birds’ nest, and found the spot where the rabbit used to stay warm.

“Well, Mr. Rabbit,” he said, “come home with me. I’ll keep you warm.” The rabbit jumped out from under another tree and said,

“Will you take care of me the way Connie did?”

“Yes,” said Morty, “come with me.” Then the cardinal and the sparrow, and the chickadee all flew around his head.

“Will you take care of us too?”

“Sure!” said Morty, “come with me we are going to have a great time.”

Morty pulled Connie through the grove to where farmer Jim would find them. He began to wonder about how he would get the tree home on his scooter. Although Connie is a little tree he is as tall as Morty, and his branches spread out much wider than Morty. Just then, Farmer Jim came by with the wagon and picked them up. Farmer Jim told Morty not to worry because he would help tie the tree to his scooter.

In the shed, next to the barn, Farmer Jim placed Connie into his wrapping machine. The machine wrapped cord around the tree branches, pulling them tightly into the trunk. When the farmer finished wrapping him, Connie was much thinner than before.

Morty carried Connie to his scooter but could not figure out how to load him on the scooter. The trunk on the scooter was only big enough to hold a picnic lunch and some tools, so Connie could not ride in the trunk. Before Farmer Jim came out of the barn to help, Morty placed the tree against the side of the scooter. The side of the scooter was smooth, and nothing was sticking out to hold the rope. Next, Morty put him on the seat. He fit nicely lying along the top and hanging over the end of the scooter, but Morty would have to sit on top of him to drive.

Morty did not like that, so he tried holding Connie upright between his legs and arms as he sat on the scooter. This was even worse because he could not see with the tree in his face.

In the end, Farmer Jim tied the tree to the seat,

and Morty sat on it. The bunny jumped on and huddled by his feet, and the birds all perched on the branches. Connie hummed the tune to Happy Birthday as they took off.

Wait Until Those Born Before 1945 Are Dead

I received a piece of memorabilia today that is also a piece of history. It came in one of those e-mails that is forwarded a hundred times with a request to keep it going.

The pictures below are all posters that were displayed during WWII. I grew up with these images and the message was very clear. My parents, who were legal immigrants lived by the principles espoused by these posters. If they are hard to see or read in the size they are in, try double clicking on them with the left button. You’ll be surprised by how clear they become.

In this day, when the country is debating the virtues of  a new Health Care Reform bill, it seemed to me that receiving these posters was a reminder of our heritage. It certainly reminds me of the price we paid for our liberty. Currently, we are faced with an administration whose plan for the country runs eerily parallel to the ones we fought during WWII.

Those of you who were born after 1945 will not understand what I am talking about. The Democratic Socialist Republic of Germany proposed health care reforms similar to the ones being pushed upon us today. The Marxists who took over Eastern European countries, confiscated personal properties and socialized everyone, and everything. The experiment paralyzed Eastern Europe for generations.

I hear POTUS  now using religion as a new strategy to sell the pig in a poke program. He is laying a guilt trip on the religious to empathize the bill into reality. This comes from a man who believes in killing unborn babies, He is also the one who came up with the brainstorm to save money by making our military people pay for their own health care. Thank God he changed his mind on that one.

The posters below represent the way ideas and issues were communicated in the early 1940’s. For all the youngsters out there, that was before the advent of  TV, personal computers, Internet, Facebook, and Twitter.

I recommend the following strategy to the liberal left, and Barack Obama. If you want to make the USA into a Fascist country, wait until everyone who was born before 1945 is dead.  Look at all of these posters and read some world  history to learn how stupid life was under Nazi-ism, Marxism, and Fascism. Then decide if you want to meet the same fate as the leaders of those isms met.

Thank you Ervin Stoss for circulating this fabulous collection.

Conserve or Die

WOW! Our country is two hundred and thirty two years old today. WIll we make it to two hundred and thirty three? Will this country, which was built by people who sought religious freedom, and freedom from the oppression of fuedal systems last another year? I often wonder if we will, but that is negative thinking. It is pessimistic, and I hate pessimism even though I am the master of it. Our country will survive. We will even survive the upcoming election. I figure we can last four years of the next president no matter how uncapable he might be. We, the general population will pay for his incompetancy with a devalued dollar, super high gasoline prices, and a lack of jobs. Most likely he will lead us into a “depression.”

I was born at the end of the last depression, and I remember the effects it had on my parents. They did everything they could to conserve and preserve what they had in order to survive another depression. Mom saved everything, Dad worked two jobs, and collected scrap. He sold the spare wheels off his car. If something wasn’t necessary, they lived without.

I’m not sure I could live up to that kind of lifestyle. I am positive that, 98% of the population of the U.S.A. would not. The only ones who could are the illegal aliens who came here with the shirts on their backs. The rest of us would take to starving, or stealing to survive.

Conservation is what it will take to get ready for a  “depression.” A mindset that focuses on those things that are necessary to survive. Grow food, sew clothes, repair shoes, preserve food, and walk or ride a bike to get places.

If the next president begins to tax us as I suspect he will, business is going to take a dive. More business will leave the country to avoid taxation. That means our jobs leave too. Of course we could leave to live in Mexico, or China, or Zimbabwe, or wherever the hell the jobs go. Or, we will rise up and challenge the government to provide more, by taxing the rich. Impeach the man who suggests that the American people should be industrious and work for themselves. Perish the htought.

It’ll be a fun time, I’m sure. In the meantime, I’m looking for every volume of Foxfire I can find. I want to learn the ways of survival from the mountain people of Appalachia. If the rest of you are wise, you will do the same, or you might just pick a president who believes in a system of incentives that motivate business and businessmen.
