Who Do I Believe?

If one is to believe the Bureau of Labor Statistics unemployment is not a problem. I reviewed the BLS website pages to decide for myself what to believe. I couldn’t discern what is happening. There are no clear figures to tell me exactly what is going on. What I do know is what I see going on around me, many people I know cannot find a job to replace the one they lost.

Recently, I had occasion to visit the Will County Land Use Bureau to get a permit to put a new roof on a house. I asked the permit man if  he has seen an increase in permit requests. He had time to talk to me because I was his only customer. The answer is NO. When I visit a business I ask how their business is doing. Many are honest enough to tell me how far down they are from 2009. Recently, I ran into a former colleague who is still working at my former place of employment. I know their business dropped by forty percent when the recession hit. He told me they were nearly back to where they were five years ago, that is a good thing. Currently I am traveling across country. I stay in a chain of hotels that I am comfortable with, and they give a breakfast as a draw. In past years, cars, trucks, and trailers crowded the hotel parking lot and breakfast was standing room only. Last night I parked right next to the lobby door. This morning, I had a premium table right in front of the TV.  The fact remains that businesses doing poorly outnumber those that are doing well. My survey is anecdotal and not scientific, but it is a seat-of-the-pants look at the business around the country.

Today, I spent time reading blogs that I follow. One of them is “Rat Nation.” I lifted a book review from the blog which I have included below. There are no words to describe this book titled “Everything Obama Knows About Creating Jobs.”

Definition of ‘Unemployment Rate’

The percentage of the total labor force that is unemployed but actively seeking employment and willing to work.

Where Did 342,693 Jobs Go?

Unemployment Rates

Unemployment Rates (Photo credit: GDS Infographics)

My math skills are fundamental, and as such I shouldn’t refute the government of the United States unemployment numbers, but I must. The level of trickery in the 7.8% unemployment number released today is astronomical.

Here is my math:

1.) From the Department of Labor Statistics the total work force in 2012 is extrapolated to be 152,230,880. (zero unemployed)

2.) Announced unemployment number today is 7.8%.  My math .078(152,230,880) = 11,874,008 people without jobs

3.) Announced unemployment last month was 8.1%. My math .11(152230880) = 12,330,701 people without jobs

4.) The number of jobs picked up in September  is (12,330,701-11,874,008) = 456,693

5.) The number of non farm jobs reported for September is 114,000.

6.) Excuse me but where did the rest of the jobs come from? My math (456,693-114,000) = 342,693 jobs unresolved. Is it a coincidence that the jobless claims for this week were at 367,000?

7.) Subtract 114,000 from last months unemployed and the real unemployment number should be reported as 8.0% not 7.8%.

Granted my logic is simple, but this smacks of a fresh dead skunk on the road. No doubt, the Bureau of Labor Statistics website and the reports are real gems. They are extremely hard to understand and so filled with confusing numbers and statistics that anyone who tries to decipher them can come up with any number he wants.

My conclusion: The number of new jobs required to get a .3% difference does not jive with the number of new jobs reported.

Even if we accept the bright side of 7.8% unemployment there are still 11,874,008 workers who are searching for a meal. Spread that to the fifty states and each state has 237,480 workers twiddling their thumbs while waiting patiently for our bigger, better, problem solving, progressive government to raise taxes some more to improve the job outlook.

There is an old adage, “Liars figure, and figures lie.

First: Let me introduce you to Dr. Tim Nerenz by including one of his opinion pieces here:

Downward Wisconsin

By Dr. Tim Nerenz

11/19/11

We used to make things here in Wisconsin.

We made machine tools in Milwaukee, cars in Kenosha and ships in Sheboygan.  We mined iron in the north and lead in the south.  We made cheese, we made brats, we made beer, and we even made napkins to clean up what we spilled.  And we made money.

The original war on poverty was a private, mercenary affair.  Men like Harnischfeger, Allis, Chalmers, Kohler, Kearney, Trecker, Modine, Case, Mead, Falk, Allen, Bradley, Cutler, Hammer, Bucyrus, Harley, Davidson, Pabst, and Miller lifted millions up from subsistence living to middle class comfort.  They did it – not Fighting Bob La Follette or any of the politicians who came along later to take the credit and rake a piece of the action through the steepest progressive scheme in the nation.

Those old geezers with the beards cured poverty by putting people to work. Generations of Wisconsinites learned trades and mastered them in the factories, breweries, mills, foundries, and shipyards those capitalists built with their hands.  Thousands of small businesses supplied these industrial giants, and tens of thousands of proprietors and professionals provided all of the services that all those other families needed to live well.  The wealth got spread around plenty.

The profits generated by our great industrialists funded charities, the arts, education, libraries, museums, parks, and community development associations.  Taxes on their profits, property, and payrolls built our schools, roads, bridges, and the safety net that Wisconsins progressives are still taking credit for, as if the money came from their council meetings.  The offering plates in churches of every denomination were filled with money left over from company paychecks that were made possible because a few bold young men risked it all and got rich.  Dont thank God for them; thank them that you learned about God.

Their wealth pales in comparison to the wealth they created for millions and millions of other Wisconsin families.  Those with an appreciation for the immeasurable contributions of Wisconsins industrial icons of 1910 will find the list of Wisconsins top ten employers of 2010 appalling:

Walmart, University of WisconsinMadison, Milwaukee Public Schools, U.S. Postal Service, Wisconsin Department of Corrections, Menards, Marshfield Clinic, Aurora Health Care, City of Milwaukee, and Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs.

This is what a century of progressivism will get you.  Wisconsin is the birthplace of the progressive movement, the home of the Socialist Party, the first state to allow public sector unions, the cradle of environmental activism, a liberal fortress walled off against common sense for decades.  Their motto, Forward Wisconsin, should be changed to Downward Wisconsin if truth in advertising applies to slogans.

There is no shortage of activists, advocates, and agitators in this State.  If government were the answer to our problems, we would have no problems.  The very same people  or people just like them  who picketed, struck, sued, taxed, and regulated our great companies out of this state are now complaining about the unemployment and poverty that they have brought upon themselves.  They got rid of those old rich white guys and replaced them withnothing.

Wisconsin ranks 47th in the rate of new business formation.  We are one of the worst states for native college graduate exodus; our brightest and most ambitions graduates leave to seek their fortunes elsewhere.  Why shouldn’t they?  Our tax rates are among the worst in the nation and our business climate, perpetually in the bottom of the rankings, has only recently moved up thanks to a Governor who now faces a recall for his trouble.

In 1970, the new environmental movement joined unions and socialists in a coordinated effort to demonize industry.  When I was in college, the ranting against polluting profiteers was like white noise  always there.  They won, and here is the price of their victory: in 1970, manufacturers paid 18.2% of Wisconsins property taxes  the major source of school funding – and in 2010 those who remained paid 3.7%.

So who is it that caused the funding crisis in our schools and the skyrocketing tax rates on our homes?  It is the same ignoramuses who are sitting on bridges, pooping on things, and passing around recall petitions.  The unemployed 26-year old in the hemp hat looking for sympathy might look instead for some inspiration from Jerome I. Case, who started his agricultural equipment business at the age of 21, miraculously without an iPhone 4s.

Mr. Case got rich by asking people what they want and making it for them.  He did not get rich by telling people what he wanted and waiting for them to do something about it.  If you want to declare war on your own poverty, memorize that.

In the last decade alone we have lost 150,000 manufacturing jobs in this state  over 25%.  And its not just jobs that have been lost; the companies that provided them are gone.  Those jobs are not coming back, no matter how long we extend unemployment benefits pretending they are.  The 450,000 people who still work in manufacturing in Wisconsin are damn good it at, but we are now outnumbered by people who work for government.  A significant number of the latter are tasked with taxing, regulating, and generally harassing the former.  While it is true that many manufacturers chased low-wage opportunities on their own, many more were driven out of the state by the increasing cost of doing business here.

It is a myth that unions improve wages.  If you consider only the 1,000 jobs in a closed shop, you might think an average union wage is, say, $30/hr.  But if you add in the zero wages of the 10,000 jobs lost in companies chased out by union harassment, the average of all 11,000 union workers is reduced to $2.72/hr.  Do you know the average wage of union iron miners in this state?  Zero.  And the left is fighting hard to keep it that way in Northern Wisconsin – looking out for the working man, they call it.

It is also a myth that free trade causes job losses.  Over the past three years, U.S. manufacturers sold $70 billion more goods to our Free Trade Agreement (FTA) partners than we bought from them.  Conversely, we suffered a $1.3 trillion trade deficit with countries where no FTAs exist.  I doubt that kids are going to learn that in our government-union monopoly schools  it doesn’t fit the narrative.

No one wants to see another person suffer in poverty, and liberty is the best economic policy there is.  The great industrialists of Wisconsin took less than a generation to lift millions up to a life of dignity, pride, prosperity and good will.  When enterprise was free and government was limited, we all prospered.

Those great men of industry were not anointed at birth to be rich; they rose from nothing to great wealth through their own hard work and the value they added to their employees and their customers through choice, competition, and voluntary exchange.  That is the only sure path to real prosperity; the debt economy is a temporary illusion.

Look again at the list of our famous industrialists and the list of our current employers.  Who would you wish your child or grandchild to grow up to be?  Who do you think will do more good on this earth  Jerome I Case and his tractors, or the Coordinator of Supplier Diversity at MPS.

If you chose MPS, then apply now  that job is open, and it pays up to $72,000 plus benefits and early retirement.  Go in peace and save the world.  Me, I’m going with the tractor guy.

Second: Dead Horse Theory

THIS IS PART OF YOUR EDUCATION FOR TODAY, IN PREPARATION FOR UNDERSTANDING TOMORROW’S WORLD………

We’ve all lived long enough to be familiar with the Dead Horse Theory. Enjoy this version of it:

The tribal wisdom of the Dakota Indians, passed on from generation to generation, says that; “When you discover that you are riding a dead horse, best strategy is to dismount.”

However, in government more advanced strategies are often employed, such as:

1. Buying a stronger whip.

2. Changing riders.

3. Appointing a committee to study the horse.

4. Arranging “fact-finding” visits to several countries to see how other cultures ride dead horses.

5. Lowering the standards so that dead horses can be included.

6. Reclassifying the dead horse as living-impaired.

7. Hiring outside contractors to ride the dead horse.

8. Harnessing several dead horses together in an attempt to increase speed.

9. Providing additional funding and/or training to increase dead horse’s performance.

10. Contracting out an expensive productivity study to see if lighter riders would improve the dead horse’s performance.

11. Declaring that as the dead horse does not have to be fed, it is less costly, carries lower overhead and therefore contributes substantially more to the bottom line of the economy than do some other horses.

12. Rewriting the expected performance requirements for all horses.

And of course….

13. Promoting the dead horse to a supervisory position.

If you don’t understand this theory, you haven’t lived long enough.

Third: The Americans With No Abilities Act

Washington, DC November 2, 2011, – The Obama Administration is urging Congress and the Senate to pass sweeping legislation that will provide new benefits for many Americans: The Americans With No Abilities Act (AWNAA). President Obama says he will sign it as soon as it hits his desk.

The AWNAA is being hailed as a major legislative goal by advocates of the millions of Americans who lack any real skills or ambition.

‘Roughly 50 percent of Americans do not possess the competence and drive necessary to carve out a meaningful role for themselves in society,’ said California Senator Barbara Boxer. ‘We can no longer stand by and allow People of Inability to be ridiculed and passed over. With this legislation, employers will no longer be able to grant special favors to a small group of workers, simply because they have some idea of what they are doing. We are legalizing another protected class of Americans.’

In a Capitol Hill press conference, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) pointed to the success of the US Postal Service, which has a long-standing policy of providing opportunity without regard to performance. Private-sector industries with good records of nondiscrimination against the Inept include retail sales (72%), the airline industry (68%), and home improvement ‘warehouse’ stores (65%). At the state government level, the Department of Motor Vehicles also has an excellent record of hiring Persons of Inability (a whopping 83%).

Under The Americans With No Abilities Act, more than 25 million ‘middle man’ positions will be created, with important-sounding titles but little real responsibility, thus providing an illusory sense of purpose and performance.

Mandatory non-performance-based raises and promotions will be given so as to guarantee upward mobility for even the most inept employees. The legislation provides substantial tax breaks to corporations that promote a significant number of Persons of Inability into middle-management positions, and gives a tax credit to small and medium-sized businesses that agree to hire one clueless worker for every two talented hires.

Finally, the AWNAA contains tough new measures to make it more difficult to discriminate against the Non-abled, banning, for example, discriminatory interview questions such as, ‘Do you have any skills or experience that relate to this job?’

‘As a Non-abled person, I can’t be expected to keep up with people who have something going for them,’ said Ken Cox, who lost his position as a $70 dollars an hour lug-nut twister at the GM plant in Flint , Michigan , due to his inability to remember ‘righty tightie, lefty loosey.’ ‘This new law should be real good for people like me,’ Cox added. With the passage of this bill, Cox and millions of other untalented citizens will finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Said Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL): ‘As a Senator with no abilities, I believe the same privileges that elected officials enjoy ought to be extended to every American with no abilities. It is our duty as lawmakers to provide each and every American citizen, regardless of his or her inadequacy, with some sort of space to take up in this great nation and a good salary for doing so.’

Of the three, I believe the first two, the third is an outright fabrication and is hilarious or in Facebook terms LOL. Check it out on SNOPES, they make a big deal about it being false.

The sad part of number three is that I wouldn’t put it past our current administration to pull it off. Thanks Jim, Ray, and Mike for your messages.

Shovel Ready

Remember when POTUS so proudly exclaimed that the trillion-dollar stimulus will be spent on shovel ready jobs? He learned the hard way that shovel ready projects are a myth.

Recently, I had some inspiration about how to spend the same trillion and solve some really huge problems.  If you would be so kind as to indulge me with some Monday morning quarter backing I want to make a proposal.

The stimulus was supposed to create jobs, keep unemployment under eight percent, and get the economy rolling again, but it did nothing but waste the money. Here is what should have been done.

  1. A large percentage of workers who are out of work are in the construction industry. With the collapse of the housing market, who needs construction workers?  Today, I spoke to a roofing contractor. He told me that normally, he puts on four roofs a week in Frankfort. Assuming a twenty-six week construction period that totals 104 roofs. This year only 13 permits were issued for new housing in Frankfort. He did twelve of them. It is pretty grueling to take a ninety-two-roof drop in business. My proposal is to build the GREAT WALL OF AMERICA along the US-MEXICO border from Arizona to The Gulf of Mexico at Brownsville, Texas. Now that would put a lot of unemployed people to work. I’m talking about a wall modeled after the GREAT WALL OF CHINA, not some pithy chain link fence that doesn’t even touch the ground and gives the border jumper hand holds to get over. Think of all the Americans and Mexicans that would be employed laying all that stone.  The Chinese wall has worked for five thousand years; I think a similar wall along our border would accomplish the same.
  2. While thousands of people are happily employed building the GREAT WALL OF AMERICA, I propose that a second project be initiated at the California-Arizona Junction on the Mexican border. This shovel ready project uses real shovels to begin digging a trench to separate California from Arizona.  The dirt excavated from the border trench is trucked to the Gulf of California to fill it in and to join the Baja peninsula to the mainland.  This is necessary to complete because after the GREAT WALL OF AMERICA is finished, the border between Mexico and California will be opened and Mexicans will have free rein to come and go into the USA as they please. Of course they are limited to getting into California.

The trench is widened as digging proceeds northward to the Oregon line. At Oregon, the digging moves westward to the Pacific Ocean. Once the trench meets the ocean the Corps of Engineers sets off a series of explosions in the trench to move California outward into the Pacific.

Are you still with me? Think of how all this construction and geological remodeling will improve the state of the world.

  1. Millions of construction jobs are created for the long term
  2. Caterpillar increases production of earthmovers by the tens of thousands creating even more jobs.
  3. The shovel factory expands production to three shifts; more jobs.
  4. Stonemasons and quarry workers work eighty hours a week.
  5. UAW guys push wheelbarrows of dirt to fill in the Gulf of California; others keep the stone moving to the stonemasons.
  6. Mexicans are ecstatic about the open border and the expanded market for drugs in the USA. Of course the Market is limited to California, where there is no end to the amount of shit they need.
  7. Both Arizona and Nevada benefit from the newly created ocean front property. Nevadans suddenly see a need for an ocean going cruise harbor and gambling casino on the New Sea of Obama. Nevada real estate agents become millionaires by selling the ocean front lots. Harry Reid moves to The Sea from his shantytown of Searchlight, and spends his remaining campaign funds gambling at the casino.
  8. The winds coming down the New Sea of Obama from the Pacific creates a new weather pattern bringing rain into the deserts of Nevada and Arizona providing cooling and fabulous farming opportunities.
  9. Oregon, and California also benefit from the expansion of waterfront property.  Movie stars create a new community on the Sea of Obama that out does Malibu, Carmel, and Santa Barbara in opulence.
  10. The digging and explosions uncover the world’s largest reserve of oil, which eliminates our dependence on foreign oil.
  11. Death Valley becomes the Garden of Eden. With a new water supply feeding the aquifers below the desert, the Park Service renames it Living Valley. There is a free flow of cheap labor coming from Mexico to harvest the abundant crops growing there.  A segment of the valley turns it into a wine growing terroir that out does all the wine regions of the world including Napa Valley.
  12. A huge benefit can come from a geological disaster. I have assumed that California will hang onto the mainland of Mexico. After the trench is completed, and the Pacific rolls in to form the New Sea of Obama. There is such a small connection to Mexico that it might just break off thus allowing California to float into the Pacific as a new island state rivaling Hawaii. The downside of this is that the open border is closed with a sea of water and the free flow of labor and marijuana ends.
  13. California already has a large Hispanic population and speaking Spanish is not a problem for them. The new immigrants will assimilate into California society seamlessly. They can have all the freebies that California can provide.
  14. Californians are forced to take care of themselves, and to figure out how to deal with the rest of the world.

Now, that is what I call shovel ready! This proposal creates jobs, fixes the illegal immigration problem, finds new oil, opens arid desert land and makes it prime property. Creates a new weather pattern for the desert states.

Since California usually does what it wants to do regardless of what the rest of the country does, they can handle the new situation anyway it sees fit to do.

The Big Hoax

Every day our lawmakers and pundits bombard us with BS.  They say, “we are a nation of laws,” but are we?  Sure, we employ sixty Senators and  four hundred and thirty-five representatives to write and pass laws, and they do write laws by the hundreds every year. When some poor slob has a problem, he writes to his Congressman to fix his problem so it never happens again. The Congressman, eager to keep his job for a lifetime drafts a law. He lobbies his friends in congress to vote for it. Together, they vote the law in. The rest of us who do not have the same problem  don’t really give a rats hoot about it. The law stays on the books, and congress forgets about it. Someone finds a loophole in the old law, and applies it inappropriately. Time passes, and some genius Congressman decides to be creative by working around the silly house rules requiring that congress debate it first, then vote on it.  A recent example of this is the reconciliation bill. The Senate adopted the reconciliation bill to fix differences between the house, and the senate versions of the health care bill. Originally, the bill reconciled differences in the budget.

How many laws do we have that lurk in the books with hidden time bombs like the reconciliation bill? Today, I tried researching what it takes for a person coming into this country to come in legally.  Try to Google that one. I got thousands of hits on what an American needs to get into Mexico, but very little on what a Mexican needs to get into the USA. There are stories of overcrowded border crossings and border patrol people at the gates who do a poor job at checking the credentials of those coming across.

I was able to glean that several presidents were involved in opening the gates to the USA. Remember when, Jimmy Carter tried to make the country bi-lingual? He wanted to post all the signs in the country in Spanish as well as English. I bet that is where “dial one for English,” crept into the vocabulary. Bill Clinton made the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) part of his agenda. He also began looking the other way when the Mexicans began flooding across the border to jobs in border towns.  George Bush was no better. He wanted the country to have low-cost labor to pick lettuce, wash dishes, and mow lawns. He is highly regarded by the Latino population in Texas.

I spent considerable time looking for the requirements for a Mexican to enter legally. I found one reference to a form that day workers use. Another actually mentioned a passport. A visa is not required. I’m sure the State Department knows what the rules are for entry, but I sure as hell don’t.

So, what is the hoax? The hoax is we are a nation of laws. We have books filled with laws on immigration to the USA. Most of them worked very well until the 1980’s. (Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA)). Ever since then, we have forgotten what the laws are, and disregard them. We fail to enforce immigration laws. Presidents encourage the border patrols to look the other way. Federal Immigration laws are in such poor regard that big cities pass “sanctuary” laws. A sanctuary law prohibits the police from determining if arrestees are in the country legally.  We do have many immigration laws, but hypocritically, we pass laws to say we don’t have to follow the laws. What is that all about?

The next big push by our president is to reform immigration. I have some recommendations:

  1.  Start by enforcing the laws we already have on the books.
  2. Several presidents have chosen to clean house by deporting all illegal aliens.
    1. During the Great Depression, President Herbert H. Hoover,  (R) ordered the
deportation of all illegal aliens in order to make jobs available  to  American
      citizens that desperately needed  work.
    2. Harry S. Truman, (D) deported over one million Illegal aliens after WWII to create jobs for veterans.
    3. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower,  (R) deported 1.3 million Mexican Nationals during ‘Operation Wetback’. He did it to give returning WWII, and Korean Veteran’s  a better chance at jobs. It took two years, but the illegal aliens went home by deportation!

These three Presidents deported illegal aliens to help the country.  Obama can do it too. He has both justifications, i.e. a poor economy and returning veterans.

  1. After we clean house, I recommend we use the laws we already have to allow these people to return legally. This is a tough action. We must take it if we are to live up to the claim that “we are a nation of laws.” If we don’t, we are perpetrating the HOAX and spreading hypocrisy across the world.

Obama will not do it because he is part of the HOAX.
