I have a problem with the government’s latest ploy to end birthright citizenship. I am preparing to be deported at my age because of this new action. Why? My parents entered the US through Ellis Island. They met and married in the USA. Then I came along with my two brothers and sister. There is a good chance that if my parents are declared illegals, then we became citizens automatically. We took advantage of the parochial school system, not the public school system. Our parents paid for our doctor visits. Neither my mother or father ever accepted ‘charity’ as they called it.

What did the government do for them? They allowed them to vote. My Dad worked for the railroad and his bosses always told him to vote democrat. Dad was a citizen and could cite the date he was sworn in, the judge’s name, and the courthouse where it happened. We learned of Mom’s situation when, at age seventy-eight she finally traveled back to her hometown to visit her mother’s grave. She was at the gate, ready to board the plane and was stopped by immigration. They wanted to see her citizenship papers. Of course she had none. After what seemed like eternity, she proudly told them, If I am not a citizen then why have I been allowed and encouraged to vote all these years? They let her board the plane.

My grandparents came through Ellis Island too . They were processed and sent on their way. So they entered legally. They got social security cards, were employed and paid taxes and bought houses . I suppose all that made them citizens. The 15 million illegals may not be illegals. If the president opened the gate and invited them that’s a defacto suspension of immigration law. What the president did was illegal. It can be argued that the illegals did not break any laws so are are not inviolation of anything. The laws were declared null and void by executive action.
All of the immigrants coming across now take advantage of our stupid laws. If I were one of them, I’d be doing the same thing.
The amendment was meant for legal immigrants from Europe coming to Ellis Island, as your parents did, the right way. Our congress has bastardized the amendment over the years, using it to their advantage and allowing illegals to come into the country for the sole purpose of having an “anchor baby.” This has to stop. No other country allows this. I hope Trump can get it done, but it will be a furious fight.
I’m in favor of any fight that results in immigration laws that are simple and easy to process. It is not easy when the department uses over 700 different multi-page forms to do the job. Each of those forms has a half-page disclaimer that puts you in jail if one is caught lying. I favor any and all of Trump’s efforts to clear up the process. The entire slate should be wiped clean and a one-page law enacted.
