A government shut-down usually means people don’t get paid. The modern shutdown engineered by Congress insures that the Administration, Congress, the Supreme Court and most of the bureaucracies get paid. Congress wrote all of that into law, and you better believe that is one law they enforce. There is a small part of people whom they have defined as being non-essential, like museum curators, National Park workers and the like. These are the people who will get their pay delayed.I feel for these people whose lives suddenly take a turn for the worse. I cannot imagine what I would do if my income stopped.
The press and all the Democrats and too many Republicans are also beginning to support the delay negotiations for border security until the government reopens. A very sad affair.
Where were these people in 2008 when the economy tanked and millions of people found themselves without a pay check? Somehow they learned to survive with help from the government. A lot of people lost their homes, cars, and some families broke up. Life was tough. The situation lasted up until Trump became president and jump-started the economy to the point where people again have jobs. People suffered for eight years. During this time those who are classified as non-essential received a paycheck. It didn’t matter that millions of people didn’t have the money to visit the museums, and the National Parks they kept getting paid. I never heard of anyone who lost a job tell me that as soon as business picked up they would get back pay. I didn’t hear that because that never happens when companies lay you off or go out of business.
With the economy booming and jobs being plentiful I am certain these non-essential people can get temporary employment to survive until Trump and Congress solves the border crisis. Certainly it won’t take eight years like the recession did, but it can last up to two years.
I whole heartedly support President Trumps tactic to keep the shut-down going until Congress agrees to negotiate.
I remember when President Reagan ran into a similar situation during his term. The Democrats got to him and promised him everything he wanted in the way of immigration reform as soon as the shut down ended. He took the bait and guess what? Congress shoved the promise right up his presidential ass. They did succeed in screwing up the laws so we have the current situation. It has to change and it won’t until both sides agree to talk. President Trump has repeatedly brought the leaders to the table attempting to resolve the problem. Each time the Senate and Congress brought the talks into stalemate.
If I were a non-essential government worker I’d be entering my résumé data online to find some job opportunities. Congress hasn’t been able to do jack-shit since 2008, and they have forgotten the meaning of the word work. They are a bunch of non-effective non-essential workers who get paid much too much for nothing.
