I’m Taking Orders

Since September I have been burrowed in my wood shop creating works of art. Actually, the art is by Judy Gale Roberts whose patterns I used to craft her vision of flowers. At this point I am ready to take orders for any or all the flowers I have executed in wood. The only warning I have is that if you have to ask what the price is you cannot afford one of these pieces. I am getting quicker in my execution, and my skill level is improving, but it still took over forty hours to make each of these seemingly simple designs. Here they are:

Dr. Orchid Revives a Patient

Miss Orchid has done it again. After six months of abuse by her owner, she decided to grant him a gift by blooming. Thank God Grumpa Joe knows an orchid expert who helped him repot her and to rejuvenate her root system into fresh potting medium.

Dr. Orchid Expert diagnosed her with severe dehydration and recommended immediate surgery. He clipped some her most severely dried roots and hoped for the best. Upon returning from the orchid hospital, Grumpa Joe assumed a new attitude about this precious symbol of his deceased wife Barbara. He began to give it the kind of care she should have received all along.

Weekly half hour showers of tepid water in the kitchen sink followed by a drenching of water spiked with fertilizer  have been the routine since November. She began to bloom a week before Christmas, and continues to sprout new blossoms, and even a second spike from her main stem. Her solitary place of honor is on the glass table in the sun-room.

My Old Friend Did It Again!

My old friend did it again! She bloomed once more. This orchid plant, a gift to Barbara in 2001, has bloomed every year since. I have abused, and neglected her, but she refuses to let me down. This year she bloomed a full three months behind her normal schedule. By suggestion from Sherman, my orchid growing friend ,  I  moved her to a new location with more light. That did the trick. Even though orchids can be low light plants they do need light to thrive. It is direct sun they do not tolerate well. I found out they love lots of bright, indirect light.

Now that she is blooming, I expect to see the blossoms well into the summer. She is my link to Barb and it gives me joy. As long as she is in  bloom, a part of Barb is still with me.
