Men Not at Work

The Church and Combatting Joblessness

By Eric Metaxas

Demographers and economists say American men are facing an epidemic of epic proportions: joblessness.

We’ve all seen the signs on highways and other construction sites around the country: “Men at Work.” Well, in case you hadn’t noticed, those signs are increasingly out of date—and not because they’re politically incorrect. The fact is, more and more men not only aren’t at work, they’re not even trying to find a job.

Princeton economist Alan Krueger counts 7 million men in America between the prime working ages of 25 and 54 completely out of the workforce, supported by someone else. That’s 11.4 percent of men in that demographic, about triple the share of men out of the workforce in the 1950s.

Besides the loss of a paycheck, these 7 million men report all kinds of problems: 40 percent say they experience pain that keeps them from working. A third say they cannot climb stairs or have some other disability. And get this—44 percent say they take daily painkillers—and two-thirds of those say they’re on prescription meds. Further, Krueger says, that they “experience notably low levels of emotional well-being throughout their days and … they derive relatively little meaning from their daily activities.”

Demographer Nicholas Eberstadt says in his new book “Men Without Work,” “We might say those many millions of men without work constitute a sort of invisible army, ghost soldiers lost in an overlooked, modern-day depression.”

How should we respond? Well, for those who are able and for whatever reason choose not to work, a biblical worldview teaches us that work is good. God gave men and women work to do in the Garden before the Fall. Work allows us to take care of God’s creation and bring glory to Him as His stewards. Work is not optional for those able to do work, and that’s most of us. There are to be no shirkers in the Lord’s kingdom. As Paul said, “If a man will not work, neither let him eat.”

As for those who want to work but cannot find a job, this demographic disaster for men is a challenge to the Church to rediscover its calling to help its neighbors—both Christian and non-Christian—find work that brings dignity and pays the bills. The great evangelist John Wesley, for example, not only preached the Gospel in the fields and among common working people, such as coal miners, he urged the new believers to take their work seriously and support all kinds of social reforms through it. Remember his famous maxim to “gain all you can, save all you can, and give all you can”? It’s still true!

Today, there are limitless ways that our churches can bless the neighbors in our communities who struggle with unemployment and its effects. One, in eastern Wisconsin, is called Project Joseph, a joint effort of U.S. Senator Ron Johnson, his staff, and an inner-city congregation called the Greater Praise Church of God in Christ. Near a Milwaukee neighborhood in which 62 percent of men have been incarcerated at some point, Project Joseph teaches job interviewing and punctuality skills to prospective employees. According to World magazine, the first class had 14 vetted applicants. Kohler, the first participating company, offered all 14 a job. Thirteen accepted offers and began work at Kohler last October. The program is now in its 10th session. Pastor Jerome Smith says, “God has used the Joseph Project to bring together blacks, whites, Hispanics, even Indians.”

There are many other examples of churches working with business and government to get people back to work. Find out what’s being done in your community—and then find a way to support it.

While there may not be as many “Men at Work” signs out there as there used to be, the signs of God’s kingdom at work are visible for anyone willing to look.

OMG! Hell Froze Over

For way too many years I told people that hell would freeze over before the Chicago Cubs will win a World Series. So, hell must be really cold right now. How long before the ice melts and everyone in hell gets back to the normal hotter than ever climate?

The Cubs also broke the Curse of the Billy Goat placed on them in the nineteen forties  by the owner of the Billy Goat Tavern when he was asked to remove his goat from Wrigley Field.

ONE VOICE

By

Doug Todd

“The goal of socialism is communism”. Vladimir Lenin

It has been said that “Socialism is the bridge between Capitalism and Communism” and, for many of us, that is a bridge we are reluctant to cross.

I tend to think of our two main political parties as being like pyramids in which the foundation stones are the local people who hold office at the city and county level and rising, step by step, with a smaller number at each level, until we reach the capstone which I see as the office of The President of The United States. The capstone could not be where it is without support at the local level.

The Democratic Party is now openly Socialist at the upper levels and no longer bothers to deny it. The American Democratic Party of Kennedy and other patriotic leaders is no longer with us. It is a sad fact – but a fact nonetheless.

We still have local Democrats who are honest citizens and who honestly believe they would never become Socialists. They are probably sincere but they seem not to grasp the fact that supporting today’s Democratic Party is, in fact, supporting socialism. The Socialists/Communists at the top could not be or remain where they are without support from the foundation level – local voters and office-holders.

We have a choice now between opposites – Light& Darkness, Good & Evil, Freedom & Servitude. Liberty and Socialism cannot stand in the same space. A vote for Socialism is a vote against Freedom and our Democratic party now represents Socialism in the Political spectrum as we see it in America.

The foundation of Socialism in America is the local voter and local office holder willing to sacrifice Honor and hard-won Liberty for temporary political gain.

The only way to guarantee a return to Self-Government is to unseat every Democrat in every local office across America. Let’s do it now!

A Woman’s Point of View

A Woman’s view on Trump

Someone asked a woman how she could vote for Trump, a “misogynist, a racist and a bigot”.

Here is her answer:

Because I use my head to research and find out what candidates really are, not what the media wants me to think.

Because Donald Trump has more women in executive and managerial positions than any comparable company, which tells me he is not a misogynist.

Because he pays these women the same or more than their male counterparts, which tells me looks for capacity and skills in people, not color, gender or race.

Because he fought the West Palm Beach City Council to be able to open his newly purchased club, so he could include blacks and Jews as members, who had been banned until then. This tells me he is not a racist.

Because he has raised wonderful children who have turned out to be outstanding, hard working and compassionate adults. He must be doing something right.

Because his economic plans makes sense, are conservative in nature, and I vote based of what is best for my family, my friends and my country.

Because everybody, the left and the right are afraid of him, the media is trying to destroy his image, and even foreign governments are voicing their opinions, so he must be doing something right. Clean house maybe?

Because I want a Supreme Court that will uphold the Constitution, not behave as minions of the administration. I have had enough with judges who are more like political activists than law enforcers.

Because I fear for my family’s safety if the current trend of not confronting blatant terrorism continues – which is a threat to our way of life.

Because I am fed up with the rampant corruption of this administration. Accountability in government is paramount, and as this administration has demonstrated, it is a foreign concept to them.

Because I am fed up with the political correctness gone wild, and because Trump is not afraid to say what everybody thinks but does not dare to say. A thug is a thug, regardless of color, and that’s it.

Because it is about time someone puts America ‘s interests ahead of other countries.

Because I know he recognizes and embraces America ‘s exceptionalism, and will not tour the World apologizing for who we are. That tells me he is a patriot.

Because, unlike HRC, he has actually held a job, worked hard and achieved success.

And last, but not least, because I am more offended by what Hillary does than by what Trump says.
