I Might Change My Mind

A few days ago, I mentioned that I’m reading a book titled “The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabel Wilkerson. At that time I was only a hundred pages into the story, and made the comment that I don’t understand why Blacks continue to ask for reparations. The various movements like Black Lives Matter, and Defund the Police are also a mystery to me. After reading another two hundred pages of this story I am beginning to understand where these people come from with these radical ideas, and why they claim that America is systemically racist. Another term I have begun to understand is Jim Crow. I have personally witnessed Jim Crow treatment of blacks during my lifetime in Chicago, except the Jim Crow policy wasn’t legislated into a law to prevent blacks from advancing.

My earliest recollection of Jim Crow treatment dates back to 1951 when a black family moved into a home in my neighborhood of Burnside. I saw a blue and white police car parked at the front of a house immediately across the street from Tuley Park my favorite childhood hangout. At the time, it never registered that the cops were there tp protect the family who had just moved in. Nor, did I know that it was a black family. Later, I learned the specifics, and it kind of shocked me. I was thirteen years old then, and did not know what racism, or segregation was. It was only into my adulthood did I learn about these things.

In this story author Wilkerson depicts very graphically the treatment of slaves. White slave owners were wrong. To them, slaves were property like a plow, a wagon, etc. At best they believed blacks to be a life form beneath that of a white human. They treated slaves like they treated mules or horses. By the time Lincoln got around to the Emancipation Proclamation, over one hundred and fifty years of abusive treatment of slaves by whites transpired. Since 1662 whites, world-wide, had ingrained the cruelly harsh treatment of blacks and the notion that they were less than human. England did not abolish slavery completely within the kingdom until 1807. a few years after the North American colonies seceded. The difference between England and the USA was that there were not many slaves living in England only the English colonies. To the English, slaves were a figment of their imagination, in the USA slaves were all around and hated. The blacks were suppressed from voting, language, education, white friends, travel, food, and entertainment. A slave owner required his slave to ask for permission to do anything, and if the owner chose not to grant the request the slave went without. Slaves were beaten for any infraction or rule in place, or a rule invented on the spot. Black men who looked at a white woman, and the look was considered lascivious by the woman or her husband the black man was whipped, beaten, and often hanged. I cannot convey the horror that a slave endured as well as Ms Wilkerson can express in her writing, and I recommend that all white people read this book.

A strange thing happened on September 22, 1862, President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and freed the slaves. Bingo! Overnight approximately 5 million blacks were instantly liberated. Except there was no radio, no internet, no phones, only newspapers and telegraph to tell the story. Blacks could not read so newsprint was useless. Most heard about their freedom from someone else. But what did that mean, freedom? Most ex-slaves stayed with their owners, and were paid something for their labor, and most owners cheated the heck out of a share cropper’s part of the earnings. The end result was that the freed man was no better off than before. But, he was now free to travel, and to speak to whites, that is, if he spoke respectfully. If a black man were walking on a sidewalk and a white was coming toward him the black was expected to step off the sidewalk and allow the white to pass. If a black man looked at a white man’s wife and the white man thought it was a leer the black was punished, usually by the white man and his friends. Very often, the black was hanged after he was tortured. Where was the freedom? If a black wanted to move off the plantation he had to reconcile his debt with the owner who always found some hidden debt, and thus was cause to keep him on the farm until it was paid off. He could now send his kids to school with whites. Except, the kids had to be kept apart from each other. Or, the black teacher was summoned to work somewhere else and the school closed. In short, the black man was not free.

Over six million blacks finally woke up to their plight and decided that the only way out was North. They snuck out of their towns on trains and busses all headed for cities like New York, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and even Los Angeles. All of them saw this as the lessor of two evils. Although they didn’t expect to find what they did. The North was basically just as racist as the south. They did conclude that the north was more friendly than the south. They learned that they did not really have access to hotels, restaurants, rest rooms, and jobs like they were hoping for. Suddenly these cities were inundated by new people squeezing into already crowded ghettos, and putting pressure on every resource the north had. The cro-magnum man did not appear on the doorsteps of New York by the millions expecting to be fed, housed, clothed and educated. The black didn’t want a handout but they did need and want work that could support them. The black man from the south took a huge leap forward in getting out of his dilemma in the south, but it took many years for them to assimilate into the populations they moved into. We often complain that immigrants coming into our country illegally must be given time to assimilate, and we as the people whom must accept them should be given time to help them to assimilate. We complain about people who come here from foreign countries who don’t speak our language, are not citizens, but want everything we can give them. We fail to recognize that the black people coming north from the south were also foreign to us. Yes, they were citizens because most of them were born here, yes, they could speak some form of our language, but we had to learn to listen, yes they were un-educated, but most were smart and could learn easily. Still, we refused to accept them immediately. I am from a generation that did not learn to be a bigot from my parents, I learned it from the population around me. Until I read this book, I had no clue as to the conditions of the people of slavery. I do not hate black people, I do not believe they are lower form of animal. I do not believe these people came here for the benefits. I do believe that most of them are hard working people who want a better life for themselves and their families. The problem was that when they flooded our cities we were not ready for them, and they were not ready for what they found.

It took man millions of years to evolve into the form we exist in today, yet we believed back in 1862 that all we had to do was sign an executive order and the evolutionary step would mysteriously be by-passed. In 1863 the proclamation was finally passed into law. That is when the individual states began getting creative in how they would keep whites and blacks separated. Each state wrote laws on how to vote, how to educate, how to sit on public transportation, how to drink water, how to go to the toilet. “White Only” signs appeared everywhere they wanted to keep blacks away. These laws and rules became known as Jim Crow laws. Now that I understand what Jim Crow means I can still see evidence of segregation going on. All of it is very quiet and never touted with signs, but people remain committed to keeping blacks out of white areas. One such example is how a white town will keep blacks out, and remain completely within the law. Most small towns are very old with small homes on big lots that were built 50-90-years ago. They are small by today’s standards, and not very architecturally beautiful inside as they are today. A builder will execute his own form of Jim Crow by buying up an old home in a desirable school district. He will pay top dollar for the home thus giving the seller a great profit. The builder then demolishes the outdated home and build a new mega-mansion on the lot which is typically two to three times the cost of what he bought the old one for. The remaining affordable homes in the immediate neighborhood just increased in value. If the builder does this often enough, the homes in the affordable neighborhood suddenly becomes less affordable to the average income family. I see this happening in neighborhoods in and around Chicago.

If I were a black person whose ancestors were treated as the 6 million migrants from the South to North were treated I’d be hollering retribution too. I am not black so I won’t say I can fill those shoes well enough to complain. I can sympathize with the plight of the blacks if they identify Jim Crow rules being applied against them. These rules are stupid, and not fair and should be abolished. I don’t believe that every complaint a black has against a white is the result of Jim Crow, and each incident must be proven to be true, and not used as a political tool to get what they want.

This book has certainly caused me to examine my conscience on the matter of racism, and racial bias. I don’t believe any human is lesser than another. I don’t believe blacks should be treated unfairly, on the other hand I don’t believe blacks should be given an upper hand (affirmative action) when gauged against others in any endeavor. I don’t believe schools should lower standards for entrance below a common norm. I do believe that poor students should be held back a year to catch up. If school districts don’t like this then too bad for them. I graduated from grammar school with a couple of kids that were twice my hight, twice my strength, and shaved. I lived through it, they lived through it, and our teachers lived through it. We all survived and thrived. Upon seeing these guys as adults they all made a living, had families, and enjoyed life.

In conclusion all I can say is that I didn’t write as exquisite an essay as I had intended, but I’m lazy, and good work takes effort. I gave it my best. The worst that will happen is that the good Lord will flunk me, and make me spend another year in this school we call Earth.

Too Many People, Too Soon

There are way too many people in America who obsess about open borders and free-flowing migrations. They envision people wandering from place to place like herds of buffalo. The mass migration from the Mideast into Europe resembled that exactly. Except the buffalo were smarter, they wandered to places they were in before, and knew there was a food supply waiting for them. They would eat the grasses, and when the grass ran out they would migrate to a new place. Eventually, they were back where they started and the grass was plentiful again. People don’t seem to operate that way. They migrate to a place they find better than where they lived, and stay at the new place regardless if it is better or not. I have never heard of any Mideastern natives who wandered back to their homeland from the heaven they moved to.

images-24.jpeg

What bothers me is why do people so desperately  need to migrate from the land of their birth?  As an engineer, I was taught to look for the root cause of problems in order to solve them. The problem of people fleeing their homeland to another seemingly better country has to have solvable answers. What makes it so bad that a person will leave without thinking about the ramifications of entering another country without a valid passport or VISA?

Migrants-68.jpg

One answer is WAR. There is something about bombs landing on your house that makes one think about leaving for a safer place. The root cause of war is way to complicated to solve in the USA. Most of it is the result of poor government, religion, or just plain stupidity.

2160ac5864bc9d058f7d328773a6f607.jpg

In order to enter the USA legally, one must have a VISA. If you want to immigrate to the USA permanently, you must first get a valid green card. Basically, a green card is issued if a person meets various qualifications set up by law. Most of the requirements are based on the type of workers needed in the country. People with education in sciences and math are highly acceptable. There are five grades of skills each one with lower expectations. There are generous acceptance criteria for relatives of immigrants already living here.

The criteria for granting green cards is one of the root causes for people ignoring the law. There is no criteria for people who don’t meet the primary criteria, i.e. a job skill needed in the USA. That is what our politicians are referring to when they tell us the system is broken. Without a skill you are not needed, therefore not wanted.

Getting a green card is not the root cause, however. Why does that person want to leave his country? Most will say they can’t make a decent living. Why not?  Probably because there are too many uneducated people who don’t meet the home country’s needs. So why don’t they need more of their own people? Well, the economy is not as strong as it is in the USA. Mexico doesn’t have as much grass to cut, or dishes to wash as the USA. But, we have people in the USA who can cut grass and wash dishes who were born here, why do we need to import this help? One reason is that it is too easy for our people to live off of the government through one of our social programs. But that is just dodging the real question of why doesn’t Mexico have jobs that will pay enough to support its citizens?

Some of the answer lies in their one party system of government. That is a system that is being ported for the USA by Progressives. The Mexican government tends to pass laws that favor the wealthy. Combine that with corrupt government at all levels and as much as 30% of money earmarked for development goes to lining the pockets of officials. There is a complaint of an unequal distribution of wealth (where have we heard that one before?) Supposedly, ten percent of the wealthiest own forty-two percent of the wealth, and the lowest ten percent own 1.3 percent. Central American immigrants can’t be coming to the US to become rich because the income distribution is similar in these countries. You will be leaving poverty to live in poverty. Except, that poverty is defined differently. In Mexico, for instance, people in poverty live on less than five dollars a day. The poverty level is defined as a family of four  living on $65.75 per day. Wow! If I were deciding to leave my poor country for the U.S. I’d be looking at making 13 times more per day as I am at home. Let’s leave now. What is not immediately obvious is the cost of living differences. If I were accustomed to living on five bucks a day, and I was now getting sixty-five bucks, I’d be sending money home. Imagine what someone would be like as your new neighbor if he were to be making ends meet on that meager amount.

Problems with income distribution exist in every country of the globe, so I am not buying that as Mexico’s largest problem. I am buying into their government not doing as well as they should with investing in the country in the form of infrastructure, and by over regulating business in favor of the wealthy.

Since we can’t solve Mexico’s corruption problems the USA have to solve their own illegal immigration problem?  For one thing, we must re-familiarize ourselves with current laws. Second, we will have to secure the border to send a message to the many who want to come here that the door is now closed. I believe that our largest problem is trying to accept too many new immigrants much too fast. We have to stop the stampede of buffalos from running roughshod over our land. we cannot assimilate as many people as the world would like us to in so short a time. We can take many more than we think if we give the process  time. That means we have to make some people unhappy along the way. If they are really interested in getting in they will patiently wait for their turn.

Some of the people we will have to make unhappy are those US citizens who will not work at all. They need to be weaned (CUT OFF) off the generous social programs that force us to raise the minimum wage higher, and higher just so we can say it pays more to have job. Right now, a person working for minimum wage makes less than someone receiving welfare.

In the mean time, we have to create work for people who are untrained to do anything, but to make tacos. I would like to have at least one person to wait on me, to clean my house, to cook my meals, take care of my kids, to drive me around, etc.(I think I just got myself in trouble here, that sounds like my wife). If every working family opted to hire at least one worker our lives would be so much easier, and some of the immigration problem would be solved. Imagine having a worker who would do all that on five bucks a day. (Isn’t that what we fought the civil war about?) The problem with my plan is that most families are working two jobs just to make ends meet.

That idea to have a  chauffeur really sounds good. That would be the same as having one of those driverless cars, but probably much safer. I’ll have to work on that.

Prove Me Wrong

pack_o_burqas.jpg

Am I a Islamaphobe? You are damned right I am. Read the account below and ask yourself if you could turn the other cheek and allow these creatures to exist among us. I’ll take my chances of walking alone through the streets of West Chicago and dodge bullets rather than allow a bunch of seventh century neanderthals to take over my country. Before I jump off the cliff of total Islamaphobia, I read an opposing article written by a modern Muslim woman. She tried to make a decent argument against the enslavement of women by Muslim men, but fails. She did however, put an interesting spin on Muslim history.

Let me know what you think?

Subject: Fwd: Joys of Muslim Women

Darn scary if you ask me
We need to be aware of these facts!

20 years from now, I will be in Heaven -This was written by a woman born in Egypt as a Muslim.
Make sure you read the paragraphs (in red) toward the end.

Joys of Muslim Women
 By Nonie Darwish

In the Muslim faith a Muslim man can marry a child as young as 1 year old and have sexual intimacy with this child. Consummating the marriage by 9.

The dowry is given to the family in exchange for the woman (who becomes his slave) and for the purchase of the private parts of the woman, to use her as a toy.

Even though a woman is abused she can not obtain a divorce. To prove rape, the woman must have (4) male witnesses.
Often after a woman has been raped, she is returned to her family and the family must return the dowry. The family has the right to execute her (an honor killing) to restore the honor of the family. Husbands can beat their wives ‘at will’ and he does not have to say why he has beaten her.

The husband is permitted to have (4 wives) and a temporary wife for an hour (prostitute) at his discretion.

The Shariah Muslim law controls the private as well as the public life of the woman.

In the Western World ( Canada, Australia, United States and Britain) Muslim men are starting to demand Shariah Law so the wife can not obtain a divorce and he can have full and complete control of her. It is amazing and alarming how many of our sisters and daughters attending American, Canadian, Universities and British Universities are now marrying Muslim men and submitting themselves and their children unsuspectingly to the Shariah law.

By passing this on, enlightened Canadian, Australians, American and British women may avoid becoming a slave under Shariah Law.

Ripping the West in Two.

Author and lecturer Nonie Darwish says the goal of radical Islamists is to impose Shariah law on the world, ripping Western law and liberty in two.

She recently authored the book, Cruel and Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law. Darwish was born in Cairo and spent her childhood in Egypt and Gaza before immigrating to America in 1978, when she was eight years old. Her father died while leading covert attacks on Israel. He was a high-ranking Egyptian military officer stationed with his family in Gaza …..

When he died, he was considered a “shahid,” a martyr for jihad. His posthumous status earned Nonie and her family an elevated position in Muslim society..

But Darwish developed a skeptical eye at an early age. She questioned her own Muslim culture and upbringing.. She converted to Christianity after hearing a Christian preacher on television.
In her latest book, Darwish warns about creeping shariah law – what it is, what it means, and how it is manifested in Islamic countries…

For the West, she says radical Islamists are working to impose sharia on the world. If that happens, Western civilization will be destroyed. Westerners generally assume all religions encourage a respect for the dignity of each individual…. Islamic law (Sharia) teaches that non-Muslims should be subjugated or killed in this world.

Peace and prosperity for one’s children is not as important as assuring that Islamic law rules everywhere in the Middle East and eventually in the world.

While Westerners tend to think that all religions encourage some form of the golden rule, Shariah teaches two systems of ethics – one for Muslims and another for non-Muslims. Building on tribal practices of the seventh century, Shariah encourages the side of humanity that wants to take from and subjugate others..

While Westerners tend to think in terms of religious people developing a personal understanding of and relationship with God, Shariah advocates executing people who ask difficult questions that could be interpreted as criticism

It’s hard to imagine, that in this day and age, Islamic scholars agree that those who criticize Islam or choose to stop being Muslim should be executed. Sadly, while talk of an Islamic reformation is common and even assumed by many in the West, such murmurings in the Middle East are silenced through intimidation

While Westerners are accustomed to an increase in religious tolerance over time, Darwish explains how petro dollars are being used to grow an extremely intolerant form of political Islam in her native Egypt and elsewhere.

In twenty years there will be enough Muslim voters in Canada, Australia, the U.S.A. And Britain To elect the heads of Government by themselves! Rest assured they will do so….. You can look at how they have almost taken over several towns in the USA .. Dearborn Mich. Is one and there are others…Britain has several cities now with Sharia Law controlled zones, totally controlled by Muslims

I think everyone in Canada, Australia, the U.S. And Great Britain should be required to read this, but with the ACLU, there is no way this will be widely publicized, unless each of us sends it on! It is too bad that so many are disillusioned with life and Christianity to accept Muslims as peaceful.. Some may be but they have an army that is willing to shed blood in the name of Islam…. The peaceful support the warriors with their finances and own kind of patriotism to their religion. While Canada, Australia, the U.S.A. and Britain are getting rid of Christianity from all public sites and erasing God from the lives of children the Muslims are planning a great jihad on North America, Australia and Britain ……..

This is your chance to make a difference…! Pass it on to your email list or at least those you think will listen..
Some of those I’m sending it to WILL NOT! Put your head back under the covers AND DO NOTHING.

No Finer Man

tumblr_ntcbbsqTt21roqv59o1_500.png

I always wondered about Thomas Jefferson, and what kind of man he was. My first exposure to him came when I watched a movie titled 1776. The first time I visited Washington D.C. I was in a hurry and short cut visiting the Jefferson memorial because it was too far off the Mall. Then I began reading his biographies, and learned a lot. My final exposure came when I visited Monticello Jefferson’s home in Virginia. Monticello blew me away with information, and I bought another biography. All I can say is that we are lucky to have had such a learned and wise man involved in the founding of the United States of America.

Here is a list of Jefferson accomplishments. For all the Liberals who read this, please forget about making him a racist for owning slaves and for having a black slave mistress. Those facts are all a matter of public record, and his relationships with slaves were totally acceptable at the time. We are two hundred and forty years away from those events and certainly evolution has changed the way we handle black and white relationships. If you still harbor ill feeling toward the man it can only be because you are too immature to move forward in a positive manner.

THOMAS JEFFERSON, SOMETHING WE SHOULD ALL KNOW!
How many people even have a clue about this man in today’s world? Not just the personal information but what he did for this country, and most of all what he foresaw in the future for this country. You may ask yourself; How could he foresee what would happen in the future? Very basic answer; he knew history and had experienced history, and he understood mankind!
So read this and see for yourself, then forward so hopefully some more people will get enlightened.
There are two parts.
Be sure to read the 2nd part (RED).
Thomas Jefferson was a very remarkable man who started learning very early in life and never stopped.
At 5, he began studying under his cousin’s tutor.
At 9, he studied Latin, Greek and French.
At 14, he studied classical literature and several languages.
At 16, he entered the College of William and Mary.
Also he could write in Greek with one hand while writing the same in Latin with the other.
At 19, he studied law for 5 years under George Wythe.
At 23, he started his own law practice.
At 25, he was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses.
At 31, he wrote the widely circulated “Summary View of the Rights of British America” and retired from his law practice.
At 32, he was a delegate to the Second Continental Congress.
At 33, he wrote the Declaration of Independence.
At 33, he took three years to revise Virginia’s legal code and wrote a Public Education bill and a statute for Religious Freedom.
At 36, he was elected the second Governor of Virginia succeeding Patrick Henry.
At 40, he served in Congress for two years.
At 41, he was the American minister to France and negotiated commercial treaties with European nations along with Ben Franklin and John Adams.
At 46, he served as the first Secretary of State under George Washington.
At 53, he served as Vice President and was elected president of the American Philosophical Society.
At 55, he drafted the Kentucky Resolutions and became the active head of Republican Party.
At 57, he was elected the third president of the United States.
At 60, he negotiated the Louisiana Purchase doubling the nation’s size.
At 61, he was elected to a second term as President.
At 65, he retired to Monticello.
At 80, he helped President Monroe shape the Monroe Doctrine.
At 81, he almost single-handedly created the University of Virginia and served as its first president.
At 83, he died, along with John Adams, on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
He understood actual history, the nature of God, His laws and the nature of man. That happens to be way more than what most understand today.
Jefferson really knew his stuff.
John F. Kennedy held a dinner in the White House for a group of the brightest minds in the nation at that time.
He made this statement: “This is perhaps the assembly of the most intelligence ever to gather at one time in the White House with the exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.”
“When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe.” –Thomas Jefferson
“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.” — Thomas Jefferson
“It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.” — Thomas Jefferson
“I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.” –Thomas Jefferson
“My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.” –Thomas Jefferson
“No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.” –Thomas Jefferson
“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” — Thomas Jefferson
“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” — Thomas Jefferson
“To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.” — Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:
“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property – until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.”

Police Harassment Answered

Black-Muslim-protest-vs-police-brutality-Gordon-Parks-1963

A friend sent me this humorous, but very serious piece today, and it kind of answers my questions about why and how police harass citizens . The recent news from Ferguson, Missouri and later from New York about police brutality against blacks made me wonder if my assessment of racism is correct. For the record, my assessment is this; We are not a racist nation anymore. Yes, many white people still do not care for blacks, but we are not racist. Not liking and hating are two different things. Believing that blacks are inferior is racist. I don’t like many blacks because they behave differently than me. Those that behave like me are good people. I also do not care for white people who behave differently than me, does that mean I am a racist, or a white supremacist? No, it means that I prefer to hang with people who have similar morals and character as I do.

For centuries people from all parts of the world have disliked each other for various reasons. The color of one’s skin is one reason that makes humans cautious about liking them. Right now in Africa, there are some very racist blacks who hate whites. Many African countries exploited by white traders, plantation owners and such actively seek to right wrongs by hating whites. Slave traders are, in my opinion, the most racist on the face of Earth. They seem to believe that they are so superior as to make their slave captures sub-human. So who should the blacks of America be upset with? Current, slave traders are number one.  They are the people who believe in treating their product as sub-human by exploiting them. Blacks are not alone in this matter, women of all races sold into sex slavery fit into the same group.

So who should the blacks of America be demonstrating against? Certainly not cops, nor any non-black who lives here. Their demonstrations should point at their slavers called the Democrat party who have exploited them with their policies of freebies and broken families.

It will take another hundred years to straighten out this mess, but we can do it by eliminating socialism and those who promote it. In the meantime, I agree with the author of the piece below. I could not verify the original author, but this version of the story seems to have the longest life on the net.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Recently, the Chula Vista, California Police Department ran an e-mail forum with the local community (a question and answer exchange) with the topic being, “Community Policing.” One of the civilian e-mail participants posed the following question:
“I would like to know how it is possible for police officers to continually harass people and get away with it?”
From the “other side” (the law enforcement side) Sgt. Bennett, obviously a cop with a sense of humor replied:
“First of all, let me tell you this…it’s not easy. In Chula Vista, we average one cop for every 600 people.
Only about 60% of those cops are on general duty (or what you might refer to as “patrol”) where we do most of our harassing. The rest are in non-harassing departments that do not allow them contact with the day to day innocents.
At any given moment, only one-fifth of the 60% patrollers are on duty and available for harassing people while the rest are off duty.
So roughly, one cop is responsible for harassing about 5,000 residents.
When you toss in the commercial business, and tourist locations that attract people from other areas, sometimes you have a situation where a single cop is responsible for harassing 10,000 or more people a day.
Now, your average ten-hour shift runs 36,000 seconds long. This gives a cop one second to harass a person, and then only three-fourths of a second to eat a doughnut AND then find a new person to harass.
This is not an easy task. To be honest, most cops are not up to this challenge day in and day out. It is just too tiring.
What we do is utilize some tools to help us narrow down those people which we can realistically harass.
The tools available to us are as follow:
PHONE: People will call us up and point out things that cause us to focus on a person for special harassment.
“My neighbor is beating his wife” is a code phrase used often. This means we’ll come out and give somebody some special harassment.
Another popular one: “There’s a guy breaking into a house.” The harassment team is then put into action.
CARS: We have special cops assigned to harass people who drive. They like to harass the drivers of fast cars, cars with no insurance or no driver’s licenses and the like.
It’s lots of fun when you pick them out of traffic for nothing more obvious than running a red light.
Sometimes you get to really heap the harassment on when you find they have drugs in the car, they are drunk, or have an outstanding warrant on file.
RUNNERS: Some people take off running just at the sight of a police officer. Nothing is quite as satisfying as running after them like a beagle on the scent of a bunny. When you catch them you can harass them for hours to determine why they didn’t want to talk to us.
STATUTES: When we don’t have PHONES or CARS and have nothing better to do, there are actually books that give us ideas for reasons to harass folks. They are called “Statutes”; Criminal Codes, Motor Vehicle Codes, etc…They all spell out all sorts of things for which you can really mess with people.
After you read the statute, you can just drive around for a while until you find someone violating one of these listed offenses and harass them.
Just last week I saw a guy trying to steal a car. Well, there’s this book we have that says that’s not allowed. That meant I got permission to harass this guy. It’s a really cool system that we’ve set up, and it works pretty well.
We seem to have a never-ending supply of folks to harass. And we get away with it. Why? Because for the good citizens who pay the tab, we try to keep the streets safe for them, and they
pay us to “harass” some people.
Next time you are in my town, give me the old “single finger wave.” That’s another one of those codes. It means, “You can’t harass me.” It’s one of our favorites.
Hopefully sir, this has clarified to you a little bit better how we harass the good citizens of Chula Vista.
